Reusable/washable/cloth nappies

Options
I'm after buying a few totsbots nappies (size 3), nappy nippas and some motherese (XL) wraps. In true MSE style, i obviously want to buy them as cheap as possible. Can anyone suggest the best place to get these please?

try ukparents or hunnybeez, they have a cloth nappy sales forum

or ebay.com, rather than ebay.co.uk - nappys are so much cheaper (even 2nd hand) when buying from the USA/Canada, even factoring in postage costs

also try yahoo, there are nappy groups, where you can buy and sell

.. but that always makes me think that maybe they aren't much good if people are so keen to sell them on after so little use.

it must just be me but i can't find any bargains for the ones i want on ebay.co.uk or ebay.com :(

I'm after some totsbots aplix nappies & motherease wraps. So i'll also need some nappy nippas. But could i use normal nappy pins as well?

Will i need some extra absorbancy pads (for night time)? If so do they go in the nappy or between the nappy and wrap?- or either/both?

Are one-use liners any good or should i go for washable? Do you think fleece liners are any good? I read on here somewhere about people buying a length of fleece themselves and making them themselves - does this really work as well as bought ones?

washable wipes - any good or more hassle than they're worth? Or should i stick with one-use ones?

These are supposed to be quite cheap:

  • Right, erm ...

There are a few options as far as nappies go. Personally I would buy from Ebay unless it was an emergency as the auction format neans you often pay MORE than is necessary. Some of the Buy it nows are worthwhile though. I get a lot of our nappies from here and they are fab. Otherwise I know my local lollipop agent (for info, try here although that site has been out of action for a while) and she pops over and chats about what we need and what will work. That way I don't pay postage either, which is good. If you're happy with second hand, ask on the cloth nappy forum of UKParents.

As far as the other questions go, I wouldn't use pins in tots (or any other nappies) as it damages the fabric and nippas don't - plus less chance of stabbing anyone

Boosters you might well need, but assuming on size threes you've probably got a little one not far off potty training, so they might not be necessary. Try without and it the nappy can't hold it get some cheap terries - or even flannels - and fold them up and put them between the nappy and the wrap. If you put them between baby and the nappy there's not much point in using shaped nappies as it'll change the shape of them.

Liners - yes, go get a length of fleece. I've found if you ask for about 20 cm (just check how long the nappy is to be sure) it costs very little but you can easily slice the fleece into 20cm long, 10cm wide liners. We also use fleece for wipes, to save even more pennies.

    Good luck!

We have used washable wipes from the off as I couldn't find disposable ones that didn't give my son a rash and I found cotton wool a bit faffy.

I used flannels and his kushies booster pads to clean him until recently, when I bought some washable baby wipes from the co op. Cotton Bottoms Baby Wipes. They are natural cotton and come in a pack of 12, 6 with blue stitching and 6 pink.

They are quite large and are much softer than flannels. They are normally £7 for a pack of 12 but were 25% off a couple of weeks ago.

They wash up to 60 degrees and can be tumble dried. I think they're great!

  • If you do make your own fleece liners, make sure that you use 100% polyester fleece. They are really easy to make - no sewing involved, just cut them to whatever size you want. I recently managed to make 14 fleece liners (15cms x 30cms approx) from a cheap pram blanket that I bought from Wilkinsons.

They are just as good as bought liners, but much cheaper - on https://www.twinkleontheweb.co.uk Miranda even suggests that you can make your own instead of buying them from her website :D

if you are buying totsbots with aplix, you wont need pins or nippas

i only ever boost nappies with flannels, cheap, slimline and you can place them exactly where needed, rather than a huge pad that fills the whole nappy (boys tend to wee where it points!! usually front and girls tend to wee underneath, so place boosters there iyswim)

i tend to use ikea flannels as boosters, as they have the coloured loops on - i know they all go through the wash, but i still prefer to keep my face flannels seperate from the ones i use on bums

yes you can easily make your own boosters from fleece (it doesnt fray, so doesnt need sewing), but i do tend to find fleece irritates skin, and can add to nappy rash, chaffing

if you are washing nappies, using washable wipes seems the sensible route, but i just didnt find them as refreshing to use, as babywipes when out and about - at home, i would just wet a flannel as needed, but when out i found they tended to go dry, warm and smelly quickly
