... am i the only one who doesn't like the aesthetics of this machine? :o

... am i the only one who thinks that the 'lid' housing the screen resembles a flattened lunchbox and is textured like artex ? :o

... and don't get me started on the 'nipple' where a trackpad should be   !

this has respectable specs, but i much prefer the acer instore at comet for £399.99. it has similar specs except it doesn't have wireless built-in ... but if you add a usb wireless adapter to the acer you would have virtually the same spec as the Thinkpad in a machine that looks considerably more modern (and more expensive)!

just my humble opinion ... i know i'm not worthy. sooooo sorry, but i cannot bring myself to like this machine ... sigh! :o

Yeah it's a bit ugly, but I think all IBM machines are ugly, especially PCs/laptops...

I have tried a few laptops and must say for build quality and all round class - IBM Thinkpad wins all the way!!!!!!!!

I have bought a few lappy's too (am in the market at the mo for a couple) and I think Tosh rates higher than IBM (I personally have an IBM 50e at this moment in time, it replaced a MultiVision and i preferred the mv!) and maybe looks a bit better too.

Compaq (HP) ones seem to have good build quality too and have track pads as opposd to the nipple which can be hard to manage for those not used to it.

But on price/spec this one does seem hard to beat.
I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.

It depends really, I've different preception that yours .. I do think IBM notebooks look rugged and awesome. I always envy my friend who has Thinkpad when I've my Compaq notebook.
  • I have two ThinkPads, and they're both great. The build quality is fantastic. Admittedly, they don't look the prettiest, but I would buy another ThinkPad rather than any other machine.

I've just come back from Staples in Sheffield. They've posted a notice saying they expect to get 20 of these machines in next week and inviting people to place their order now.
Don't know if they'll take telephone orders, but if it helps anyone, the telephone number is 0114 272 1915.

Just been into our local Staples store.

There is a correction instore to the product description as originally detailed on the flyer.

The CD/DVD writer is NOT dual layer but single layer.
I think they meant to have put dual format rather than dual layer.

    Still a cracking offer though!

Latest update today at Staples Yardley Birmingham.
They understand all stores are getting 20 in - their's expected 'mid' November.
    They have 8 pre-orders against their 20.
    When they're gone, they're gone!

I'd agree with the posts above that it's solidly built if a little ugly - DEFINITELY get the memory upgrade, but DON'T stick some heavyweight antivirus on it like Norton, cos it gets really slow at startup - try F-Secure instead, there's some good reviews and it definitely runs a lot faster than Norton.

Other than that I'd recommend it for that price, I got it a year or so ago for just under £450 and I thought that was a good deal.

The memory upgrade is really easy to do yourself, but I'm sure any local small PC shop would glaldy help you install it on the spot for a minor charge/free!

so did anyone actually buy one then?

I've got a IBM T42 laptop which is ugly but very good.
