I have been looking myself for deals as I managed to buy a second hand one from an auction site for £150 for a 60gb, but the seller pulled out, saying he sold privately, but it now has me in a buzz.
I checked game and gamestation and they are all offering £299 for the 80gb. however one or the other site shows the spec difference in the 3 models. In summary they all have the same processors etc. the key difference i could see was the 40 and 80 they do not have usb x4, no memory card slot reader and not ps2 backward compatible(and there was 2 other things, which will show on the 80gb detail page). It looks like the 80gb is a 40gb model with a larger HD.
I have seen on game website the date for release is 22 August so hopefully we will all see the prices drop.
Personally I would be looking for a 60gb as this seems to have more options
  • Yes, the 60gb has more features but I don't think it's worth the extra £100 or whatever people selling them used decide to charge. If you really need more than 2 USB ports you can buy a hub cheap anyway. I've never needed more than one USB port at a time. Obviously everyone's circumstances will vary, but I've never had the need for a card reader either. The backwards compatibility is a bigger issue but I kept my PS2 to play PS2 games.

I would recommend the official playstation forums for advice in models. There will be 60gb owners on there who will tell you if it's worth it or not.

The only differences between the 40gb & 80gb is the six of the hard drive and the new 80gb version comes with the dual shock 3 controller rather than the non-vibrating six axis one.
I have a 60gb ps3 and to be honest, I've never tried the backwards compatibility or used the card slots, guess its down to how much you think you'd use the backwards compatibility and if it will work with the games you'd want to play.
  • Has anyone seen any 80gbt advertised yet?
November wins...a book, a designer handbag (worth £550 :T) and a game. I am now an addict and thank everyone for taking the time to share and post. :D

Hi I hope you can help me - my lads birthday is tomorrow and he is going to get a little bit of cash (well a lot from his great grandparents) and has his heart set on buying a ps3 when he counts it all up with a little bit from his savings. Can any of you let me know the best deal I can get him - the cheapest I can find is £299.99 for a 40gb and £350 with a console pack and 2 games from Argos. I understand that these aren't back compatable so he will have to keep the PS2 (will be looking for cheap cable tidies I think!!) He was looking to get Assasins creed and Turock in that bundle - is this a good deal?

This is what i think at this time of the ps3

40GB - good if your on a budget and you don't have/want to play ps2 games and don't the media slots at the front

60Gb - the best package. If you are looking for the best this is the one. you want to be able to play your old ps2 games as well without hooking up the ps2

80Gb - same really as the 40gb really but just more storage.

But as many users have already said: Sony actually recommened in the instructions how to upgrade your PS3 HDD so don't go buying the 80gb because of the 40Gb more storage. You can buy a good 300GB hdd for £50.

Anywho if you really want the best Ps3 get the 60gb. I got mine from Ebay i have never looked back. I got a PS3+Contoller & 2 Top Games last year for £500 (in dec after Sony Discontinued the 60GB). It runs far better than the 40GB.

    take a look here:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360081121273
    thats £399.

Look around before jumping in to buy it. there will always be better deals.

THE 80GB PS3 COMES WITH THE DUAL SHOCK CONTROLLER!!!!!!
You know, the one that vibrates, just like they all should have done. Buy the 80gb on Friday. You're paying a premium for the 60gb which will become a cult console, pretty much just for the compatibility with SOME PS2 games, which you'll honestly not use often, especially if you still have the PS2.
As it's just out don't expect any mega-deals, just look out for bundles with games that you may want. Check Argos, Game, Gamestop, Smyths, ToysRUs, Currys etc.
