I know this question is probably impossible to answer, but does anyone have any rough guesses as to how much the "old" (bit of a bad term) 40Gb consoles will drop in price?

Like you say, until it happens we don't know. Sony have said they won't be discounting them, so that means retailers won't get them cheaper off Sony, and the RRP will stay at £299.99. It'll be down to the individual retailers, and how much stock they have to get rid of. Keep your eyes peeled for the usual suspects...

With the new 80gb being the same as the 40gb, I would buy a 40gb if they come down in price and buy a new hardrive. I got a 320gb from ebuyer for £60 I think and it was really easy to change over. It even tells you how to do it in the ps3 instruction manual.

No, the 40gb is not backwards compatible with PS2 games at all. Unless you can get some dodgy emulator online, but I wouldn't download anything unofficial.

On the 40GB model you cant play PS2 or PSOne games and also you dont have an ethernet connection and no memory card reader built in. You also only get 2 usb connections. The 60GB console has all of the above plus a total of 4 usb connections.

I was not aware of any 'old' 80GB consoles been sold in the UK as when I got mine it was on the release date int he UK and was a 60GB.

    Hope this helps.

Edit: I meant wireless connection not Ethernet!!
