I just remembered - the last batch of Herman, I got so fed up with (in both senses of the phrase) that I didn't want to carry on with it, but being a MSE type, didn't like to throw it away either, so I hid it in the freezer.
Does anyone know whether you can start it again from frozen?
Or should I just give him a decent burial in the dustbin?

At a guess it should start again. A nose test will surely tell you if things didn't go well.

  • I remember as a child my mum and nan used to have a cake they used to keep the "dough" in the corner of the living room for a while ( I want to say weeks but that sounds yucky) but it seemed ages anyway. It was left to develop and we used to get in trouble for sticking our fingers in to eat it cas it was delish.
Anyway although vaigue my memories at dough used to rise and my mum covered it as before she baked it used to pass some back to my nan for her to make a cake.
I can't ask either of them if this is a real memory or a fake one for reasons I won't go into, but I'd love to know if anyone has a chance in hell of recognising what I'm going on about and giving me the recipe
    Please!!!!
    Many thanks

I remember this - I was given a starter by a friend and we had to feed it sugar for ages, then use it. My mum was so fed up with feeding the culture and having it sitting around that she vowed she'd never make it again - but it was lovely!

This isn't quite the one we had - but it was something like this:

    Hi Sallylizzie,

Someone posted about this a couple of years ago, I'll try to find it....

    Here you go: Friendly Cake??

I'll merge your thread with that one later to keep all the replies together.

  • Hi there!
My Mum also made this cake when I was young and we always loved it- she called it a german friendship cake.

I came across it again recently here in a holland, where they all seemed to call it "Herman" - now I've just peeked at the link it seems it's not just a Dutch thing!

I wonder if it evolved from a way to keep yeast going, if it was a scarce ingredient?????
I think I found also that as Herman got older he didn't seem to rise so much IYSWIM!!:rotfl: :rotfl:

I have to say too that as delicious as it was, I did get a bit fed up of it eventually - and also ran out of friends (who like to bake) to give Herman's babies to! They all had their own Hermans going by then and were also looking for friends to give him to!
