It's not exaclty a chain letter though as there are no threats involved with not passing it on (have not had a cake and have never heard of this before). It sounds like a lovely community spirited thing to do, and a great way to let someone know you think a lot of them imho.

Exactly if you don't want to you don't have to pass on the cake, you can just make it without passing on and freeze and cake or dough you have spare :)

My friend lives too far away for me to pass on the dough to so I have emailed her the starter recipe and instructions if she would like to have a go herself :)

    What a charming idea!

How about hosting an afternoon for close friends. Everyone has to bring something to share with all present. It could be crafts, preserves, even things like manicures, etc if someone has a talent for such things.

You could serve up Herman delights and everyone could leave with a Herman starter kit!!!

I was also given Herman starter and yes it made a lovely cake. I have frozen 4 portions as I couldn't pass it on immediately. This site tells all.............

I'm fed up of Herman - I just keep getting Hermans (well, probably his offspring). There are only so many Hermans you can eat/pass on. I've now run out of friends to give a Herman to  and TBH I really don't like it very much - and it took much longer to cook (for me) than the instructions indicated. But then maybe I'd done something wrong? I'd rather make a quick (as in takes an hour, not days) bread pudding :) BTW, the last Herman I received was a victim of Hermanicide - he got flushed! :rotfl:

I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like it. Hardly dare say it, I feel like a traitor and a murderer because I didn't pass Herman on!

It seems there are a lot of Herman slayers out there :rotfl:

I can't wait to try it though. Never had a sour dough cake before. Do successive generations improve in flavour?

    Reviving this thread!

I have Herman, at the moment am using some as starter to make sourdough bread but a good 2 portions are in the freezer.

If anybody in London wants to get some, just get in touch with me, I can quickly defrost and restart the process and will have a viable Herman in a few days.
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).
  • Does anybody have a recipe for Friendship cake? It's made of yeast and the Yeast is left to ferment and then divided between friends,
so they can make their own cake and split between their friends.
