When recording in the 4hr and 6hr modes of the DVD recorders, is the quality truly comparable to VHS video recorders recording in short play and long play?

    Thanks.

I find that 4hr mode looks better than SP on standard VHS.

Comparing the 6hr mode with VHS LP is a useful analogy, but it's not quite the same - the resolution on the 6hr mode is the same as the 4hr mode but the bitrate is lower - this can cause minor pixellation, sort of an 'edge blurring' with fast movement. Overall, I would say the effect is better than VHS LP.

Mine also has a 8hr mode which shows a bit more obvious pixellation, but I find it works great for the kids' cartoons on the portable player in the car, with the smaller screen they look perfect.

Note that I have described these settings when using my own Philips recorder. The quality of encoding does vary from one brand to another - I have compared the Philips with recordings made on two other budget recorders and the quality is better on the Philips, particularly on the lower quality settings.

However, as other posters have said, the LiteOns are very good indeed and are undoubtedly the best budget brand.

Well my 4KUS (Liteon) arrived from SVP today, I plugged in all the cables ready to go into setup, waited...waited...Did not power up, after trying different plug sockets in the house and jiggling the cable the display came on but as soon as I unplugged it and tried again, nothing. Anyway eventually got it to power up and after hours of trying to store the channels even though the picture quallity wasn't too good and the sound was like talking in a tunnel, I thought I'd try a disc in it.....hmmm the disc drive sort of had a thought about comming out then changed its mind. Anyway too late today to give them a phone call so i will do it tomorrow. I hope this is just a bad one I received and the replacment will be ok. Not to happy about having to pay postage to return it though and the walk to the PO ! I'll let you know how the replacment goes.

If anyone is going to buy anything from SVP (blankdiscshop) sign in as username = disqworld password = price and you will get a small discount on a lot of items.

I deal with this company all the time, and they are excellent.

thanks for this..but just wondering where this came from?
  • Anyone tried recording via digital thru a scart?

I am having problems as it wont record any of the itv or C4 channels. But the BBC channels an others are fine. Poss due to encryption.

Also the datawrite DVD+R yellow tops from SVP dont work with the unit. And I wouldn't bother with scart splitter boxes (that went back to dixons)

The recorder is great and quality is class. Recorded later last night which was excellent.

Hope someone can help me, I have one of the old ondigital boxes.
  • Market seems to be coming down with the Asda offers this weekend. In their WALMART SUPERSTORES they have the Cyberhome DVR 1600 for £59.xx and the PYE 645 for the same fifty nine pounds odd.

Any views on these against the 4kus?

Kwik Save have also reduced their Cello Recordable DVD, model R100LB, by £10 to £79.99 (same model as Mustek advertised on ebuyer £85 inc p&p).

SVP replaced my faulty item next day , also dropped the new one off and took the faulty one away so no postage costs ! also communication with them was first class. The new recorder is working great and I'm very pleased with the recording quality. I've recorded via the scart from my sky box and not come across any problems so not too sure what your problem is.

.... thanks ..... lots of interesting stuff on here. I am looking to buy a DVD recorder. I cant decide between the 4KUS (liteon) or the SUMVSION one. I am tempted to go for the cheaper one, however I noticed it did not list progessive scan as a feature, wheras all the others did. Yea I did the google search to explain and understand it and I reckon it is a good thing to have (even if it lost me a little - LOL) but is is something that should make me choose the Sumvision recorder which has it?.
