  • Tesco have their ALBA unit (don't know the model) at a reduced price of £69.95...

It may well be good. The great thing about the Liteon decks is that they are a leading company in the field of DVD recorders and a known quantity.

Any brand of this type of DVD recorder is really just a computer in a small case, which reminds one of a VCR. And Liteon are leaders in DVD drives for computers. The only other (main) components are the power supply and a motherboard, including the processor and memory. I removed the lid from my Liteon 5005 and the build quality looks good. I wouldn't pay a penny more for a brand like Sony or Panasonic, unless any extra features strike you as vital for your particular needs.

I'm looking at buying a dvd recorder, but it looks like the prices are in a nose dive. Better to wait a while? What do you all think.
  • Just a quick question. Can you set the box to AV and then record off sky? What output/input sockets does it have, scart or svhs or other. Does it have an iternal hard drive too or do you record directly to DVD?
  • Sounds like a good deal. To save space though, I installed a DVD recorder into my PC for only £29.99 from Micro Direct in Manchester (0870-444 4456) and my DVD's are £7.99 for a 50 spindle (+ p+P)from ebuyer.com. Using DVDShrink and DVD Decrypter - (both free downloads). OK, I can't record TV programs, (unless I get a TV card) but it works well otherwise.
  • Hi

I know this may sound abit dense :o but OH keeps going on about a DVD recorder, but he loves all gadgets etc anyway and dont know if he really needs one. What exactly does it do? We have a laptop and main computer both with DVD writers in them, we download films etc from internet then put on re-writables or blank dvd's. We can also copy from one dvd to another-will the dvd recorder do the same as this

  • For most people, a DVD recorder will just replace their aged VHS recorder, they will tape off the TV.

It is obviously also a player for playing movies/cd`s etc.
  • I have a DVD writer in my computer as well as a Liteon DVD recorder in the lounge. There is no competition in terms of ease of use, e.g. for recording a film off ITV, or capturing footage from a DV, Video 8 or VHS camcorder. Or for backing-up old VHS tapes. The Liteon stand-alone unit wins hands down. Tasks which prove simple with the Liteon can be problematic on the computer. If you are a real expert computer user it may be different but I suggest that most people would be happier with a stand-alone DVD recorder.

Also, the DVD recorder sits next to the TV in the lounge, on which I prefer to watch playback. The computer is in a different room, and not generally used for watching movies, etc.

  • So if I open an ALBA box, I can expect to see a drive made by one of the major manufacturers? I've bought 'budget' electronics and white goods before, and when the time comes for maintenance or spares, they're always 'big name' parts I need. My cheapo washing machine was a 'Bosch in a box' and my supermarket VCR was 'Toshiba inside'. Every time I pay a premium price for a name barnd, it goes wrong PDQ. The budget stuff has a much lower expectation and usually exceeds it.

Didn't we have a really good thread on who actually makes what a while back?
