Liteon DVD recorder- £79.99 - superb

I recently bought my second Liteon DVD recorder; on behalf of a relative. This one came from svp.co.uk (blank disc shop) and cost a remarkably low £79.99. My own model - Liteon 5005 still impresses me every time I use it.

The £79.99 model is badged "4KUS DVR-230 DVD Recorder" but is actually a Liteon, as can be confirmed from a label on the back. My 5005 remote works with it, and the screen displays/menus/instruction manual are all almost identical, as is the superb picture quality.

Quite simply, the playback picture and sound are at least as good as the original broadcast when using SP 2 hours (per DVD) recording mode. I sometimes think the playback picture looks even better than the original.

At £79.99, you simply can't go wrong with the highly-regarded Liteon brand.

I got my p&p for only £1.50 because they gave £3 off p&p last weekend (normally £4.50) if you're a member of their buyers club. All you need to do, is register and you'll hear of frequent deals like the £3 off p&p. On other occasions, p&p is totally free. When I phoned them from Devon, when I was down there in April 2005, they said collection was not allowed and they were mail order only, but perhaps they've changed the situation more recently.

Further details can be found here:
http://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk/acatalog/dvdrecord.html

One thing worth mentioning is that the 5005/5006 models work with both dvd+r and dvd-r blank discs, whereas the 4KUS model only works with dvd+r (and dvd+rw) blanks, etc, etc. But so what?

  • For the benefit of anyone who is interested in this deal but has never heard of SVP, they are probably best known as a blank CDR and DVDR retailer and have a large and loyal customer base.

I have ordered from them many times in the past and always found their customer service has been truly excellent. I bought a DVD rewriter for my PC from them a few years back - later I noticed they had reduced their price by £20, just a day or two after delivering my order. I emailed them pointing this out - I got an email back almost straight away (on a Sunday!) advising that my Credit Card had been credited with £20!

Highly customer focussed outfit and I'm happy to recommend them. (No I don't work for them!)

Being lazy (and having not Googled this before I post), but do you know whether these are region-free, or can be remote hacked to become so?

Think this might do the job for my parents for christmas....

They can be hacked very easily. Got 1 last week, just type in a code and Bob is your mother's brother!!!
  • Bought my 4Kus at Asda earlier on in the year. I got mine for 99.99 and thought it was a bargain. 80quid is an absolute steal. This recorder has given me excellent service and is a doddle to use with the easy guider function. Yes multi region hack is very easy to programme.

I thinkthe main issue when deciding on a digital recorder is if it has more than one tuner. In the days of VHS you could watch one channel while recording the other but with digital you have to have the set tuned to the channel you are recording. (unless you have more than one tuner).

How many does this model have?

These Liteon DVD recorders, like most DVD recorders, and all VHS recorders I know, have "only" one tuner. But I would never use that one tuner, let alone two! I use a digital Freeview box which feeds the signal into the Liteon. I can then either use the TV's own tuner or another (cheap) Freeview box to watch a different channel at the same time.

    Hope this helps.

Good link, but i was browsing that and saw the {HA 4143} Sumvision SV-1001 DVD.
I'd pay a little extra for this one since it has DivX playback.

    Anyone got this?

Its got 6 phono audio outputs for dolby digital 5.1 output. Just wandered if I can plug my existing speakers into them without an amp, or would I also have to have an amp?
  • I bought this around 2 weeks ago. It seems pretty good. DivX works a treat. When recording using its built-in tuner, the picture quality is pretty good on its top two settings. (60min & 120min) After that, it looks more like video quality (180min & 240min). It has not played a handful of copied dvd-r's (problems with the sound). Most disks are OK on it though. I may need to investigate to see if it is any of the settings...Some of the menus are a bit fiddly to navigate, but can be overcome with persistence!

As far as the outputs are concerned, I believe they are at line level, so would need to go into an amp.

Overall, pleased with my purchase and delivered next day!
  • Tesco have their ALBA unit (don't know the model) at a reduced price of £69.95. It's a clear-out of stock and they were available in a big pile by the last till at the St Neots Tesco Extra.

I don't know if they're any good, but I can tell that they're cheap!
