I had lots of problems when I first got my LiteOn from Argos about a year ago, paid £109 then for it. It was quite fussy about the type of DVD's I used in it. Went though 3 different types, before I finally found some DVD-RW's at Maplin it seems happy to record on. Also had several problems with the Timer Recording, and discs not being finalised properly.
I would also recommend upgrading the Firmware on this recorder via the updates on LiteOn's web site. This will update your recorded with the latest software updates, fix bugs, and media compatiability problems.
Well, Ive just updated mine, and the Timer problems seem to have finally disappeared. Apart from that its a great player. Ive got the scart from my NTL box plugged into the back so record straight off the box. Great recorder all in all.0 -
Hacks can usually be found using Google but please, I would avoid dvdremotehack.com like the plague...
The story below is based solely on my experience. Legally I couldn't possibly imply that this was a scam, a rip-off, a conspiracy or some other ruthless ploy to get your money for providing nothing of any value at all.
I got ripped off by the site mentioned above (as have others as you will see if you know your way around a search engine). A website that seems to have the ability of a basic computer:
- Input (you give your PayPal details)
- Process (they transfer money into their account)
- Output (you get a code that anyone could make up that doesn't work on your player)
- Corruption
You are unable to get a refund from PayPal. As soon as I tried to file with them, they pretty much said that they can only give refunds on tangible items (even when I entered into quite extensive emails with them), so...
Why not set up a site that claims to generate the winning lottery numbers each week by studying previous form. You could have false claims and testimonies from former "customers" and say you can supply it for only, let's say, $6.
You could even claim it runs under Windows, Linux and DOS and with the right installation instructions, will run on a Casio calculator. You could even claim to donate 99% of the money to charity.
There is one crucial point here though, you have to say you accept PAYPAL ONLY as then your victims, oops I mean customers, will have no chance whatsoever to get a refund.
This will work for any scam (I mean service) where you can supply something that is not tangible.
Not that I would really recommend you doing this unless you have as much conscience as https://www.dvdremotehack.com or their sister company (OnlineCoders.com) who also don't respond to emails.
Use them at your peril. Maybe if I had scoured the internet a bit more before parting with hard-earned cash they wouldn't have been able to rip me off too.
Whilst I'm talking about PayPal, please note that if you are in the UK and get a proof of posting only (when sending an item you have sold on Ebay), if the buyer claims to have never received the item, PayPal will automatically give the buyer a refund, no questions asked. So I see plenty more scams based around this. This is why my hundreds of listings each month no longer accept PayPal, I don't see why my customers should have to pay extra for insurance just so PayPal don't automatically refund, even when the seller can prove he sent an item.
For a company with so many flaws (I mean bizarre policies) I am amazed that Ebay wanted to get anywhere near them, let alone buy the business.
The more I experience and hear about PayPal, the more I can see why they are unable to take down the website PayPalSucks.com - I guess you can't argue with fact! LOL0 -
I'm avoiding any video recording device which doesn't have an integrated digital tuner. Ideally I'd like a combined DVD/HD/Freeview recorder but so far their prices are too high IMO. I saw an 80Gb Bush HD/Freeview recorder last week in Tescos for £100. Unfortunately the manual didn't say what if any other inputs it had. Possibly via a scart but no i-link or RCA connecters that I could see. I was considering swapping out its HD to my PC to archive any prgarmmes to DVD, but I don't know if its HD would be in a format the PC could 'see' or use directly. Anyone know anything more about that machine or alternatives?0

I have a SumvisionSV-1001 at home and unfortunately it is going back as there is a fault with the sound. SVP are a lovely company. I've dealt with them for some time both through work and privately.0

My Sumvision SV 1001 has developed a wierd fault. When playing commerical DVD's (or my own!) The sound of the characters voices is incredibly quiet. All of the rest of the audio is fine. I've tried lots of triks with different leads, resetting etc but no luck. It's going back to SVP who are anice company to deal with.0

I agree, whether it be bargain electronics, hotels or cars. You often don't get what you pay for. You get more.
Yes, I'd wager that an Alba DVD recorder would have a 'big-name' DVD writer inside. And the other major components are probably from a company like Liteon, too.
Another advantage with the Liteon units is that they are widely supported on various Internet forums, like if you need a hack to make the unit multi-region.

Ummmm.. brilliant post. HAve read my way thro all the posts on this subject and I am now even more confused. All that jargon. Someone just give it to us in an easy to understand format. I read all about the DVX stuff and havent a clue what thats all about. What does this DVD recorder do. please someone explain in terms that the dumb blonde in me can understand.
)
One question could I connect this up to my cctv camera instead of my video???? Im sure one of you technical guys out there can speak plain english..0 -
wooza
>I read all about the DVX stuff and havent a clue...
Unless you're a real tech enthusiast, ignore it all. The reasoning behind my opening post is simple - for a mere £79.99 +p&p you can buy a DVD recorder to record 2 hours of anything (BBC1 etc) on to a blank DVD for only about 25p. The quality is 10x better than VHS and the 'tape' cost is far less, too. So you can simply replace your VHS deck and all your tapes, perhaps after 'backing' some precious VHS tapes up to DVD.
If you can connect your cctv camera to your video, you can almost certainly connect it to a DVD recorder. The replay quality should be much better. You can select recording modes between 1 and 4 hours per blank DVD. If it's a security camera, perhaps there are 'time lapse' considerations which I wouldn't know about.
Hope this helps

Sounds like a great bargain, Im looking for a cheap dvd recorder!!!! Just for people like me who havent a clue with anything remotely technical, reading the above am I right in thinking then that you must watch the same program as you are recording???? In which case it would probably be a waste of time for me cos on the occasions that I do watch tv, there is usually something on the other side I want to see also. Also is it possible to record programs run through a digi box........I know I know, your probably thinking Duh!!!!! .........but as I said Im a techo thicko!!!!!0

If anyone is going to buy anything from SVP (blankdiscshop) sign in as username = disqworld password = price and you will get a small discount on a lot of items.
I deal with this company all the time, and they are excellent.0
