I've just rented out our house in Dover, bigger than the average 170 m 2 four bed in lovely quiet area but close to the town centre and most importantly the best neighbours you could ever wish for...... the rent is £675 a month, but would be £600 a month if we were brave enough to manage it ourselves.

That's incredibly cheap for the size. Is Dover a poor part of the UK with minimum wage low salaries?

My 4bed is smaller than that at around 160m2 and i would be able to get near enough double your rental amount.

We pay £1k a month, for a 3 bed flat.

come on where are some more london people. I know ndg you work in london - whereabouts do you live? I think I need to move there!
Our 1 bed flat is £953 a month in SW london. Reasonably big for a 1 bed with a separate kitchen and good sized lounge and bedrooms.
Go on all you non-londoners, gasp/mock away!!!

Have lived in a 3 bed flat that was the penthouse suit so to speak that cost £650 per month that was in Chatham (shared with 4 other people at the time so it worked out well for costs). It was 5-10min walk to everything that you really needed as well. Buses, trains, grocers etc all within that time frame of walking and that included getting down the lift/walking down the stairs from the top floor. Being back with my parents again was a great shock to the system but after losing my job and the flat quite literally falling apart it was necessary. If in good condition the same kind of place could get around £750 at least in the same area now but some will be lower depending.

In Gravesend where I am now you can get a 2 bed apartment for an average of just over £700/month. The cheapest I could find for a 2 bed place in Gravesend is £495/month that is above a shop. Not that my fiancé and I could afford it as it stands anyway. The worse thing is that it just gets more expensive as you get closer to London. I have a friend that paid £300 for her share of the rent and there was 4 people there so £1200 for the 4 bed flat that was a living room and kitchen downstairs, a bathroom, a shower room and 4 bedrooms so not much space really and the price was without the other bills taken into account (CT exempt though as all were students at the time).

RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.
