From house prices to fish in one thread... Love it!
Yes, I agree - it's neither the time nor the plaice....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
Some politicians see this as a pernicious practice that should be banned. Politicians gave us World War One and the Millenium Dome.
We had a big warehouse near it on the Peninsular, nice and cheap, recycling textiles and creating lots of utterly, cool stuff. We were there 9 yrs.
The Dome got built, plus all that Legoland Newbuild around it....and then someone decided that our area was worth a fortune.
I couldn't quite work out how a brownfield site (where the workers, 100 yrs back , were known in the locality as 'Tarbabies' as they were covered in black soot / slime after work each day) could suddenly become so swishy.
Then the Tellytubby style Sainsburies was built and our days were numbered.
There was a scam going on during the build.
The soil had to be cleaned on the whole site prior to the build. So we watched lots (100's) of dumper trucks arrive onsite empty, load up with earth, leave, supoposedly to get the earth cleaned in Hampshire (?? I'm not 100% but that's what I recall) and return.
But we heard they went around the M25 twice, then returned to unload (and pick up the slip that delivered the cash).
The thing that convinced me that there was nasty stuff in the soil was a longstanding member of staff worked in the warehouse a couple of days per wk ()the remainder in our shop).
He had asthma.
He had to give up working with us on the Peninsular as he could hardly breathe. He had to bring in an electrical type inhaler just to be able to function.
I recall having skin problems during the build.
But The Dome was great. Used to take the kids down there and it was deserted. We had cheapy passes because we were 'Locals' (!).
Obviously, the character has left the area....even MacDonalds shut :T......... it is now Nandos.
Best bit was the tube.....until they got rid of the parking.:rotfl: :rotfl:0 -
Another vote for the Dome. I thought it was brilliant. Sadly only went for one day, I regret not going back a couple of times.
The real problem was that the press were dead set against it and seized on the initial troubles, then wouldn't let go. Plus of course the government didn't seem to have a plan with what to do with it after the initial exhibition.
It's a superb building though - criminally underutilised.--
Every pound less borrowed (to buy a house) is more than two pounds less to repay and more than three pounds less to earn, over the course of a typical mortgage.0 -
another for the dome. Thought it was excellent and is now being put to good use as o2. Criminal the bad press that place got. It shouldn't have taken so long for it to become what it is now.0

Actually Mrs Generali went to the Dome and said it was wonderful. It was never going to get a good press after they left the editor of every national newspaper standing out in the rain on NYE.0

A short position is related to trading in shares. If you see a share you think is likely to go down in price, you can borrow some of them and then sell shares you borrowed. You then hope that the shares will go down in price so you can buy them back for less than you sold them for and return them to the person you borrowed them from thus making a profit.
Instead of buying at a low price and then selling at a high one, it's sell high and then buy low.

Thanks Generali. So does that mean there is money to be made on the stock market at the moment? (regardless of the ethics of it). If so, is as individual traders or part of a fund?

Yup. Many funds are 'long only' so can't sell short. It's mostly hedge funds that are allowed to.0
