I think maybe your expectations aren't fitting in with what the Remoska does - for instance, it doesn't grill! I love mine and have just lent it to a friend whose kitchen is being rebuilt; the main things I told her were 1. remember that it hardly loses any liquid by evaporation so use LESS LIQUID than you normally would and 2. if you want things really browned (eg chicken pieces), brown them first in a frying pan.
If you have time, read the Remoska recipes on this forum or look on the Lakeland website for specific recipes for the Remoska - I think you won't be disappointed once you're used to it. Or if you are, take it back! Don't feel you're stuck with it as that would be a real waste of money.

I agree, read the Remoska thread and see what others are using theirs for. I have had mine for over a year and delighted with it. In fact use it nearly every day instead of putting the oven on and it definitely saves on electricity costs. Had a delicious tea tonight of pork steaks with some apples, peppers and onions thrown in and a bit of apple juice as well. It was really tasty.

I also love making scones in mine. The first batch do take longer than it says in the book, think mine take about 20 mins for the 1st batch but the following batch take much less time. You do not have to preheat the Remoska, in fact I think it actually says do not preheat in the book.
Good luck and hope you find some tasty things to cook in it and that you don't feel you have wasted your money.

Excuse me, but I understand grilling to be cooking with the heat source above the food. If this is the case then grilling is the only thing a remoska can do!

Yes, I know a Remoska doesn't get hot enough to cook a lettuce leaf, but it does "cook" form above so is grilling.
  • Dunno if i should be brave enough to admit this or not,

You go for it girl :T

Having a remoska is like buying a pushbike and telling all the car owners that pushbikes are brilliant because you can go anywhere your legs can take you.

You should have bought a halogen oven

(quoted post #4 from Geordie Joe)
Actually, to grill means to cook by direct radiant heat or flame. Usually the heat source when grilling is above the food, but this doesn't mean the Remoska is a grill! Obviously in a Remoska the heat source is above the food, but it is a gentler form of heat than the extremely fierce heat of a grill.
Clearly there wouldn't be many takers for "grilled" cakes, loaves of bread or casserole, yet there are lots of MSE-ers on these forums who swear by their Remoskas. A few swear AT their Remoskas, in which case it's time to get rid and choose a different appliance!
I think it's just horses for courses. Choose whatever works for you.

I've had my remoska for months but I dont really use it as I thought I would. I dont think it will ever be central to my kitchen as my SC is. Its not that there's anything wrong with the Remoska, everything I've cooked in it has turned out fine, but I use my micro/combi a lot and with the slow cooker and steamer I dont often think to get the remoska out of the cupboard ;)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

  • Before I make a facetious comment about how fab my oven is at cooking everything and how much room I have on my worktop without a Remoska, slow-cooker or bread maker can someone tell me how much it costs in fuel to cook say, a batch of scones in the oven for 12 mins and how much it costs to cook them (badly apparently) in a Remoska for 20 mins? I honestly have no idea about fuel costs at all. I know these appliances are cheaper than ovens but by how much?

To Cooking Mama, don't be afraid to say if you don't get on with an appliance, and please please don't assume that everyone who contributes to this board uses them.

This thread is very useful. Namely because I have a BM and a SC as well as various other things littering up my worktop. Some I use every day and others I think that I could do without. I was wondering about a Remoska, because everyone raves about them and they apparently use less electricity.

I think that I'll just continue using what I already have - but will just investigate using the SC more. Thank you.
Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.

Taking a unit of electricity to be 12p.

A standard Remoska would cost 2p and an electric oven using 1500watts would be 4p (figures rounded to nearest whole penny).

However, a standard remoska is only 21cm in diameter, so you won't get many scones in it. You'd have to do several batches of scones in a remoska to match what you could do in an oven.
  • my remoska is one of the most worked items in my kitchen. I bake and cook every day and hardly ever use my big oven these days. My sourdough bread cooks in the grande remoska in just 40 minutes and I get wonderful results, almost like cooking in a conventional bread oven (ie better than in a normal ovenand it uses a lot less energy.

You have to look on it as a different way of cooking and then just get used to it. It cooks by radiation and the black surfaces all absorb the heat so the heat is all around the remoska, not like a grill when the heat comes down from all over the top onto the food.

OP try something very simple like a few chicken breasts with mushrooms and peppers cooked in a little tin of condensed soup, or simple baked potatoes. Later when you have had some more experience you will see that you can make a divider from foil and also bake potatoes at the same time as the casserole cooks.

A slow coker is a completely different kettle of fish. I use mine from time to time ie when I am going to be out and want the meal to be ready but the sc is my last choice for cooking because of the blandness of its way of cooking and the boring texture produced
