Slinky - it's very possible that they WILL take it back, if it was from Lakeland. Their customer service is excellent.

We are very happy with our Remoska. There are some things we still use the oven for, but some we prefer the Remoska. It certainly gets used a lot. If nothing else, it's a nice extra heat source when we need to get a lot of baking done in one day, used in conjunction with the oven.

  • .Also i do realise that "old style"is about more than just buying gadgets, but i had just joined the forum and the remoska was relevant to me.
Sorry Cooking Mama:), I wasn't thinking of you at all when I made that comment. People are often referred to this board from elsewhere in order to help them cut grocery costs and quite often I've seen comments along the lines of 'I've been reading the board and realise I need to get a bread maker/remoska/slow cooker'. It is easy to get the impression that OS is just about these gadgets (and shopping at discount supermarkets, oh and 'bulking out things with lentils':p:D). Well, not everyone has them or wants them. And yes, I can well see why slow cookers and bread makers are useful to many esp. if you are out of the house all day.
  • I was discussing this with the children yesterday - my can't-live-without-it appliance is still my washing machine :T

    Penny. x
Oh yes, I'd trade my freezer for a washing machine if I had to choose one or the other. But my fave food appliance other than the cooker obviuosly is the freezer.

I wasn't that thrilled by it, to be honest. I got one off Freecycle (and promptly relisted it!) My thought process is that it may save a few pennies off a traditional oven, but what it saves in money, it loses due to the fact you can't cook much/everything in it. Eg last night I made a whole roast in the oven, set to 220C in about 40 minutes. That was everything, chicken, pots, parsnips, carrots, stuffing, y puds... the lot. All went in at the same time and they all came out at the same time.

The remoska method would have meant half my food was cooked while I waited 40 mins for the other half to fnish, or having half the food. It all evens out for me at the end of the day. That's just one example. I'd rather use my toaster (take 20 seconds to toast) rather than wait 2-3 minutes for a cheese toastie.

I think it does serve a purpose, for example in motor homes, studio flats with small kitchens, but imo, the expense of the actual unit could be put towards a simple, energy efficient oven/grill.

Years ago I was fascinated by gadgets of all sorts and bought loads for the kitchen, most of which I seldom used.

I get by with a double oven (electric with ceramic hob), dishwasher, pressure cooker and food processor. (Obviously washing machines as well). I have recently bought a set of stainless steel steamers (less than £20 at Argos) which I am finding great.

I look longingly at things then I think "if I buy that will I use it and how much space will it take up?" That usually makes my mind up. I also now have a rule that for anything which comes into our house, the old version goes out. So a charity shop got some of my old saucepans:rolleyes: when I bought my new steamer.

I have ditched things like filter coffee maker, electric carving knife and other bits & bobs and I've never been persuaded to buy a slow cooker, bread-maker or Remoska.

I do have a bit of a thing about those clip-lock food containers though but I use them all the time for storage so they're money well spent!
  • Well I gave my Remoska another go tonight. I cooked two small pieces of pork loin that were on offer at Lidl. for £1.99 and 500grams each. Instructions said to cook for 50 mins, I took them out after 1 hour 15mins and they were just cooked but still very moist. I suspect they would have dried out a lot more in the halogen oven.

Hmmm, I think I will have to trawl through the remoska recipes and see how I go. I also picked up a 1kg piece of gammon for £2.99 so will have to decide whether to try it in the Remoska or the pressure cooker.

I did once try asking if anyone who had a rattling lid Remoska had found the new replacement to cook quicker but never got any replies. Maybe if anyone who reads this had a rattling one, please could you post to say whether the new one cooked quicker?

No, the problem (if that's the right word) with halogen ovens is they have a variable temperature and can get a LOT hotter than a remoska, and they have a fan. People tend to set the halogen oven to hotter than a remoska can get, so things cook quicker, but they will also dry out quicker too.

If you set any kind of oven to the same temperature as the remoska then they will cook very similar.

I doubt they will, it's not the rattle that governs how quick they cook, it's the temperature they cook at and that is always low.
  • Geordie Joe, you have hit the nail on the head. I must confess that every time I use my halogen oven it is at full temperature - no wonder it cooks so quickly lol. I was vaguely aware I could regulate the temperature but have never bothered which is purely down to my own laziness. One thing I love about the halogen is that I can cook from frozen which suits a disorganised soul like me, I don`t think this is possible in the Remoska.

Out of curiosity, do you ever cook curry or casserole type dishes in your halogen oven? Sorry for wandering off topic, but there do not seem to be many halogen fans around so I thought I would `grab` you while I could!
  • Slinky, I don't cook, or eat curry but casseroles are fine in a halogen oven, just get the temperature right, remembering that it is a fan assisted oven.

If you can cook curry in an ordinary oven then you can do it in a halogen oven.

You could cook from frozen in a remoska, but if you wanted it for your tea on Thursday you'd have to put it in the remoska on Monday morning :rotfl:
  • Once again thanks for everyones replies, its interesting to see all the different points of views.im quite amazed at the number of people who have returned their Remoskas too:think:
Geordie joe,do you have any recipes/tips for the halogen oven?.is it possible to cook cottage pie etc,or pizza dough or,puff pastry (maybe home made sausage rolls),or steak pie type things?.Hey,maybe you could start a Halogen oven recipe thread,i think there may be more halogen oven owners than you realise;)must admit,i almost sent that back too when i first got it,only kept it when i realised i would lose around £17 in P+P:eek:..but ive learned to like it in the last few weeks, just takes a wee bit of getting used to maybe.

PS, does anyone know if its possible to cook homemade sausage roll type things in the Remoska? or a steak pie?..think id do the steak in slow cooker first tho.working again tomorrow(oops, look at the time..that should say, working again today:wall:),so Thurs/Fri should give me enough time to try different foods/recipes etc and decide wether or not to keep it.....maybe i should take it back and get this instead..id still be £80 up:rolleyes: Anyone else tried this similer item?..

oops sorry, seems im not allowed to post links, anyway its a square electric cooker from Ideal World(can i say that?)similar to a remoska in that it runs on 650w,and is heated from the lid,if anyone wants to check it out then its on Ideal world website, under title Home, then subtitle cooking and dining, cookshop electric square cooker.
    ps.its only 40 quid.
