I wouldn't want a BM full stop - but I drive a Focus, so I can't really criticise.Genie

A 54 plate BMW bought from a main dealer should be perfecto.
Don't stop hassling them until it is perfecto.
And ask for warranty on all repairs, not from the date of car purchase.

Cars have to meet condition and mileage requirements to make it as AUC. Earlier this year I saw a 1999 33,000 mile 528i SE in imaculate condition advertised as an AUC which will have had a 12 month warranty with it.
Prices for these cars are often at the right place in the market too, though there are some rip offs around.0 -

I had looked at a used 1 series beemer but a quick google seems to reveals several cases of timing chain failure, usually slippage. Perhaps the guides/tensioners are plastic crap? Eithr way,i now wont be buying one as i dont want to pay good money what what i had considered a good quality car only to have such a rudimentary and yet critical engine part fail with disasterous consequences. BMW hang your heads in shame..0

But BMW are doing the timing chains on a recall basis...0

also, you could google any car on the UK roads and you'd find a list of bad points about them and you'd go everywhere on a bike - tho even then you'd find the bike would have problems, so you'd go everywhere on a bus, but that would break down, so you'd go everywhere on foot, then you'd moan about dogshit on the pavements. so you'd end up being a hermit perhaps...0 -

... and the other forum I visit on a daily basis (for 3 years now) is Europes business BMW owners forum and I've never heard anything about problems with timing chains. Checking further, it seems to be related to the 116i or 4 cylinder petrol engines (the older ones shared with the Mini and Citroen / Peugeout). I can only find one reference to this anyway. Is this waht you were considering?
Of much more concern is the idea of having this feeble engine inside a chassis that really needs more power to get up to speed quickly so you can enjoy the winding road. You pay for this great handling with a fairly firm ride, you really should get the power to exploit it or get a more comfortable riding car that suits having less power. 120d, may be 118d, 125i, 120i barely acceptable.0
