Tim, many thanks for the helpful reply - much appreciated. I am in the market for a new bed/mattress - think I am one of those that will prefer a latex mattress, but now feel compelled to try out the foam/spring combo too.

So should I understand that the base (divan/slats) for a latex mattress isn't that important?

Yes it is, but it depends on the make up of the mattress. Contact the manufacturer (not the retailer)
Also, for latex, are there any particular characteristics to look out for? many of the mattresses I tried out this w/e seemed to boast of different densities for different parts of the mattress (legs, chest area, etc.)

    Jim

I think their claims are complete rubbish. What happens if you turn the mattress around, or sleep in a different position?

Hoping for some feedback from a bed guru... I fell in love with the M&S M305 pocket sprung mattress today (it says 876 springs in a double & it's ok for slats) and there's currently 20% off - but only til Tuesday! So I need to act fast.

I know you shouldn't choose just from trying them in the shop but I swear, this is the only mattresses I have EVER tried in a shop that was actually COMFY!

What I need to know is if anyone knows anything bad about M&S mattresses (eg are they made by Silentnight? ;) ) or is this a decent choice?

Sorry to put a dampener on it, but it is a non turn pocket sprung mattress, so if I were you I'd forget it.

Thanks so much for your quick response Tim!

Is it particularly damaging to pocket sprung mattresses (as opposed to coil/foam) not to be turned? Or is it just a general rule of thumb, to prolong its life?

I'm asking because being brutally honest I'm unlikely to turn a mattress *over* very often even if it can be done - and I'll be sleeping on it (kingsize) alone so wear won't be the norm (I wander and fidget in my sleep!)

I realise it shortens the life of the mattress not to be turned but a) it's hard to do alone! and b) I basically just forget to. I'm probably the world's worst housekeeper !!

Yes it will damage a pocket sprung mattress. You would also void your guarantee.

They have it listed as medium to firm. However 12.5gauge open coil springs are firm.

Personally I'd go for a medium for a 5 year old.

Thanks Tim - back on the mattress hunt tonight - any thoughts on this one?

It depends on the type of mattress, but to be on the safe side turn it once a week for the first month. Then once a fortnight after that. Open coil sprung mattresses can handle being left a month between turning.

    THAT often?

Do you mean all the way over, or just around?

No wonder my mattress has died so fast.

Does the mattress you mentioned several hundred posts earlier exist yet? It was seasonal, with foam one side, & non-foam the other.

Finally, would you be able to recommend a type of mattress for me & the OH please? We have a beautiful metal bed frame - sadly of not such great quality. It has wood slats to which we have added more. I was about to buy a foam mattress topper, but after reading this epic, I see we'd be better off with a new mattress.

OH is a very hot sleeper, & of heavy build. I'm smaller than him :p , pregnant, uncomfortable & cold. Is there any hope, or shall we get separate beds now?

Yes That often.....you should alternate between turning it around, and turning it over.

How big is the gap between the slats now?
