Can anyone tell me if i got an ikea malm bed would i have to buy the ikea mattress or could i use a normal double mattress?

I've got the malm bed frame and it's great although as other posters have mentioned, a non-Ikea mattress probably won't fit perfectly.

RE: the mattress. We bought a SleepEezee mattress brand new on Ebay, for half the price of what we had seen it for in the shops. Can definitely recommend that brand of mattresses - it is fantastic. Pat spring, part memory foam. And it came in a vaccuum packed bag so carrying it up the stairs was easy. Won't be so easy to get it back down again when we decide to move though!

Tim, if you are still around, please can you elaborate on your assessment of IKEA mattress quality.

Opinion around the net seems to vary widely with some saying they are great and last for years but with others echoing your comments.

Your opinion is interesting because you work in the business but I am puzzled how you could conclude that quality is poor from a visit to the store. Surely, without cutting the mattress open, all you can see is a white or grey rectangular block?

I visited Ikea for the first time last year. After hearing all different stories about their quality I decided to keep an open mind. What I noticed is that Ikea seem to sell a mixture of great ideas, strong sturdy looking furniture, and furniture that is like the MFI of years ago when you were frightened in case there was a strong wind because it could fall apart. However when I reached the mattresses I was appalled by the low quality. When beds and mattresses are your business, it is a good idea to know what you are talking about (unlike many reps in some high street stores). You don't have to cut a mattress open, you only have to feel it to tell if it is good quality or not. You will notice that they sell alot of mattress pads which are really to hide the poor quality of the actual mattress.

Can you send the link to the mattress you have bought. The reason I ask is because I have never heard of a mattress that contains springs that comes vacuum packed and rolled up. To roll the springs so tightly would damage them.

I bought an Ikea bed and mattress several years ago but a few months after we bought it my husband knealt on the bed and put his knee through one of the slats on the bottom! The mattress was terrible, after only a couple of years all the springs were sticking up and it was all lumpy, sorry, i can't recommed them.

Are`nt they guaranteed for 25yrs ? thought i read somewhere they are.

I'm not exactly sure how Ikea's guarantee works, although many retailers add long warnaties to their goods, but this is not like a guarantee. I was cought out by a 2 year waranty from DFS. When my sofa was faulty they said they couldn't repair it because they didn't make that model any more. However they could replace it as long as I paid £200 towards it. So don't get confused between waranties and guarantees.

Also would you really want to keep returning a bed over and over again?

    Hi,

I want to buy a single mattress, but have no idea which brand to go for. I'd like a firm one with springs (don't want a foam one of any sort) and would rather pay more for one that's good for my back. The most important thing really is quality (although the less expensive the better of course!)

I've looked for mattress reviews but can't seem to find many.

    Thanks!

    Hi.

There are a few mattress review sites, but many of them seem to actually be owned by manufacturers, although they try to give the impression that they are independent.

Don't be fooled by the power of advertising into going for the big brand names as some of them have lowerd their quality to save costs.

What type of base are you going to put the mattress on?

    Thanks Tim.

It's going to go on a divan bed base, replacing the old mattress.
