I feel for the carers of dementia, quite a few i have come across try to hide it, but they come to the point of not coping any more. It is distressing and guilt laden. A great weight seems to be lifted when their relatives get into a decent EMI, resendential or nursing home.
About 20% of dementia patients will suffer vasular dementia and it declines more rapidly than Alzheimers.
Go with your instinct. Age Concern maybe able to help.

I haven't had the time to read through all the contributions to this thread so forgive me if someone else has mentioned what I'm saying. I turned on radio 4 today and heard the tail-end of a discussion by psychologist Oliver James on this very subject. He's written a book called 'contented dementia' and it might be of interest to the OP. If you go onto the 'You and Yours' website on BBC radio 4, you can 'listen again' for a few days more (not sure how long). They also had some discussion on listeners' calls, including how to react to someone in residential care who wants to 'go home'.

Just thought it might be useful.

    Your and Yours website link.

I've just tried to 'listen again' but it says today's programme isn't available yet.

They have recently done programmes on care in the UK and a dementia consultation, so there are links for both of those on their website too.

oh, sorry about that, didn't try it myself, but I'm sure it will be available soon, perhaps tomorrow.

seems to be working now. a word of warning - I find the BBC sites incredibly slow, so if it takes a bit longer than you're used to, don't worry.
