Costco benefits

have recently joined Costco at a cost of £29 (incl Vat) for a yearly membership and I found that there are good savings to be had.

Upon joining I got a 'Costco Passport' entitling me to special offers every week.

This weeks offers include:

20 'MACH 3 Razor blades' for £10.93 (incl VAT).
1 Kg of Kenco extra smooth coffee (red jar) for £6.99 (incl VAT).

The Mach 3 blades are normally about £4 for 4 in supermarkets and the tub of coffee is normally £14.99 in Costco.

I was also given two vouchers for 20 off digital photo prints for free and a voucher for two free snacks (incl. drinks) at the cafe/restaurant.

Future offers include:

JVC 20" LT 20 E 50 LCD TV for £349.99 (previous price £399.99)
Buy any 5 cases of 24 cans of Pepsi,7UP or Tango and only pay for 4.#
Comfort Easy Iron conditioner (5 litres) - Buy 2 for £4.45

There are also weekly offers in store on flyers.

All in all I feel I have more that saved my initial joining fee.

Hope this helps someone out there!!!

  • I used to be a member and found that the biggest discount is on Michelin tyres. For around the same price as no-name tyres you can get good branded tyres fitted

Even if we are passing a Costco at lunchtime and we don't want anything from the store, we always stop off for lunch there. Pizza or Baked Potato and very reasonably priced. Think we have more or less saved the cost of our membership on lunches alone.:D

i never got a passport!!! what is one and where do u get it from???
  • They post them out in early September - or if you go to member services desk they will give you one. (Some warehouses have piles at the entrance)

In many cases it helps if you say where you are - someone with local knowledge might be able to give local specifics rather than general advice

I could join via my employer but am not pursuaded. A colleague swears by the Tyres (mentioned in another post) but also they do very good value Glasses (they have an in-house opticans) and supposedly maintain a lifelong guarantee on all items you bought there so long as you retain your membership.

I find it is easy to get caught up in the Costco shopping trip and end up buying a lot of stuff you "think" is good value, when really it's little or more cost than buying it in smaller amounts at Asda or Tesco.

    Beware. :-p

Tyres do seem to be the big draw, and also washing powder. I'm still not convinced by the alcohol or the food sections.
  • I have to say that I find it great value.

Recently they were selling Berkinstock shoes for £12 in Edinburgh. They also have Levi's regularly for under £15 when I've been in.

As with most stores it's not all bargains but there's great finds to be had every time I've been through the door.

The quality of their diamonds is superb and an independant jeweller has confirmed their guarantee that they provide diamonds at half the normal expected price.

For those of you that go through Diet Coke like I do (Similar to water!!!) it's extremely cheap. Typically under 90p per 2 litre bottle.

The furniture is generally superb value also. Most of the mexican pine stuff is found in John Lewis in Edinburgh or Glasgow at up to 4 times the price and they use the same suppliers.

The guarantees on electrical goods is beyond superb. I took an old analogue camcorder back a few years back as it was chewing tapes. It was outside of the warranty but they gave me a refund. The same day my dad asked if they could recommend a repair centre for this camcorder (The same model bought at the same time as when I bought mine from them!) as he had dropped it in Spain and the door broke off. He was asked how high it was dropped from (Waist height!) and they simply said it shouldn't have broken from that height and gave him a cash refund without him even asking for it. Bear in mind that this was outside of the manufacturers warranty.

As you can see I'm a big fan and also don't forget that your cards work globally.

We bought a portable DVD player last year on honeymoon in Florida. It has since broken and I have been offered a cash refund here in the UK at current eschange rates or they have offered a dollar value refund when we go back to Florida this Christmas. Again, this will be out of warranty but their great service record comes to the rescue.

If you can get a membership through work for free then bag it as it can never hurt to have for free. If you're after something big it definitely worth the fee. You could ask if you can have a temporary guest pass to have a look around. We did this initially as it let us access if it's worthwhile. They also guarantee that they'll refund your membership if you're not happy at any time.
... and that's all I have to say about that.
