    I've been Money Tipped!
From personal experience, salad things don't defrost well and nor does mayo. Soggy egg mayo sandwiches did not go down well :( hehe.

I think things like ham and chicken are ok and I did cheese once which I think turned out ok.

Bread-wise, I haven't noticed any difference to be honest.

I'm sure the other ladies will be able to give you a bit more guidance.
    Hth :)

  • thanks - that's useful - I had assumed mayo woud be OK...so very plain sandwiches it is, I guess! well, more moneysaving than I was expecting if nothing else!
  • you could always get a small pot of salad or mayo ready in fridge night before then take to add to sarnie when you ready to eat it, would that be possible?

I'll add this thread to that one later to keep the ideas together.

Ham and cheese with butter worked best for us when we used to freeze sandwiches. All the ingredients defrost in a timely manner, ready for lunch if you take it out first thing in the morning to take.

  • I've made and frozen successfully roast beef and horseradish sandwiches, roast chicken, stuffing and cranberry sauce sandwiches, and ham and mustard sandwiches.
I've heard mayonaisse separates, not sure about salad cream though? Fresh salad is a no no, but sundried tomatoes and pickled veg I would have thought would be ok.
It never occurred to me that sandwiches could be made and frozen in advance ready for lunches until I ventured onto Weezls thread, but it certainly saves me heaps of time each morning and OH doesn't have to waste cash buying them at work because we ran late that morning....again:o

I can't imagine a whole defrosted sandwich being very appetising! But I tend to freeze whole loaves of bread bought at reduced price. Would take out the number of slices needed for the next day and defrost them in the fridge overnight in a plastic bag. Then make the sandwich fresh in the morning; only takes 3 or so mins if you've also prepped the fillings (eg. grated some cheese / peeled a carrot / deseeded a pepper and chopped into lengths, then wrapped filling in cling film).

To be honest I have never managed to freeze sandwiches successfully they just are not the same as fresh.

I have started making them the night before to be honest to make packed lunches for my 2 kids and my partner only takes 5 mins so it is worth doing it fresh for me.

I always make sure that things like tomato are not in direct contact with the bread so I would put say the meat or cheese on the bread, the wetter salad stuff like tomato and cucumber on top of this and then lettuce on top that way all the watery stuff is in the centre and does not make the bread soggy

If its of help, I make mine and OH's the night before and put in the fridge until morning.

I make sure they are both together so that I don't miss either. It would be very easy for me to do that :o

We usually have cooked meat or cheese. I sometimes have mayo instead of spread and this is fine spread on the bread and then in the fridge overnight.
