Ignore this - I just reread the post, rendering my original question pointless!

Two years too late (to quote another latter-day punk song). The Pistols first gig was in November 1975.
True, but they were thrown off before even finishing their first song! I'm not sure if there was an official date for the start of punk rock or an official celebration but the BBC regarded March 30th 2006 as the date as that was 30 years since the Pistols played the 101 club for the first time. I think most people just celebrated for the whole year!

My youngest brother loves Jonathan Richman's music. I'd never heard of him so looked him up and found an article which said that some of the bands that are considered the founders of punk actually say Richman is. Personally I haven't a clue about the genre and find Richman's stuff quite quirky, yet interesting, in a moth flying to the light type way. :) .
Johnathon Richman is an American and so is regarded as Punk in the same way as the New York Dolls, Television, The Ramones and possibly the earlier Velvet Underground were also regarded as Punk but it was different to British Punk.
If you have seen the film Something about Mary (which was once given away in a newspaper as a free DVD, just to keep this post slightly back on topic!!) the guy who keeps popping up singing and playing guitar is Johnathon Richman himself.

Gold (based on Wilbur Smith's novel Goldmine) (1974, IMdB 5.5) - The Mail On Sunday
    Directed by Peter R. Hunt
Starring Roger Moore, Susannah York, John Gielgud

    cover.w200.jpg
This action-packed adventure, starring Roger Moore and co-scripted by Wilbur Smith from his own blockbuster novel, Goldmine, was Britain's contribution to the 1970s rash of disaster movies. Shot in South Africa (to the fury of anti-apartheid groups and various trade unions), the film oversimplifies its themes of racism and exploitation, but it delivers the goods for most of its exhausting running time. Moore is as wooden as a pit prop as he seeks to prevent the sabotage that will send the price of gold soaring, but Bradford Dillman is a splendid villain and Susannah York invites sympathy as his duped wife.

Unfortunately, my local newsagent ran out of the Sunday Times last weekend, but I'll make more of an effort to get this week's edition - just for the Ian Dury, Spizzenergi and Jilted John tracks!

Look in charity shops. I never buy papers for DVD's or CD's any more. I got the first 30 years of Punk CD today for 25p from the Sue Ryder shop. I'll get the next one for 25p too. It might take a few days longer than buying the paper but by this time next week there'll be loads of them.

Free Learn Spanish in a week CD, Part 1.
All new course on eight free CD's.

Listen and learn Spanish with our brand new 8-CD language course

Following on from last years enormously popular Learn Spanish in a Week course, we are giving you the chance to develop your Spanish language skills even further with a new 8-Disc Linguaphone “Listen and Listen” allTalk Spanish course.

    Learn to speak Spanish
Linguaphone's team of professional writers have created a unique and entertaining storyline that will keep you motivated as you work through the 8 CDs. By spending just a small amount of time each day listening to the CDs, you could reach a conversational level of Spanish in just a few months. The great thing about allTalk is that you can study at your own pace, learning the words and phrases that will really be useful to you. You can stop and start whenever you need to, revise the sections that you're not sure of and keep practising until you're confident. You'll be amazed at how quickly you pick it up and you'll soon be enjoying the buzz of making yourself understood!

Disc one is free with today’s (Sat) paper and the next seven discs can be picked-up each day from WHSmith starting with Monday’s Daily Mail. We’ll print a voucher each day for you to take into your local store.

Alternatively, you can collect four of the separate tokens we will print each day and we will send the whole 8-disc course to your home (£6.99 P&P). And as a bonus gift you’ll also receive a handy phrase book - perfect for summer holidays or city breaks in Spain. So don’t miss Monday’s Daily Mail for the next part of this amazing Spanish course.

If you missed our learn Spanish in a week course last year…....?

If you did not get our fantastic 8-disc “Lean Spanish in week” course form last May, you can apply for it for free! When combined with this week’s series of discs you can build a complete 16-disc comprehensive course worth £99.80.
We can either send you last year’s course on a single MP3 encoded CD, which will play on all home computers, most DVD players and some modern CD players. Or you can apply for all 8 discs in standard audio format which will play on all CD and DVD players whether at home, in the office or in the car.
