The Guardian (Next Saturday - 21/04) will have a CD of the Greatest Speeches, to tie-in with the Great Speeches booklets they are giving away every day next week.

Never saw this on the date quoted - although the great speeches booklets did appear and ran until yesterday (I think).

However today's Guardian (May 5th) did have a speeches CD in it !

Apologies quoia, I got the date wrong. I misunderstood the original source of the information. Sorry!

However, I'm pretty sure I have the following date correct as I got it off the promotional stand in my local newsagent - The Sun is giving away more Carry On DVD's (a different set from their last, similar, promotion) Monday to Saturday from 14th May. Token redemption on day of issue in participating newsagents (Martins, McColl and others), plus another in the following Sunday's News of The World (not sure if that's a token or if the disc will be in the paper).
Films this time include Carry On Constable, Carry On Regardless and Carry On Abroad. Nothing yet on the Sun website.

Only a year late! Everyone else celebrated 30 years of Punk last year as it was 30 years since the first Sex Pistols gig. Better late than never though but doesn't this kind of go against everything we stood for in the 70's? Free punk in a mainstream establishment newspaper! Pah, Sid will be turning in his grave. Actually, speaking of Sid, they would have been better off claiming it was to celebrate Sid Vicious' 50th Birthday which would have been yesterday, 10th May.
Interestingly, 8 of the bands on that list are still going strong. And they said it wouldn't last.

Thanks for the info, but I wouldn't neccessarily class some of the bands listed as Punk; some of them are pub rock, others New Wave.

Depends on how old you are and on which era of Punk you are into. With the exception of Jonathan Richman, Theatre of Hate and possibly Blondie (at least the track on here) I would say that they are all Punk bands in it's original (purest?) form. The second wave of Punk i.e. bands such as GBH, Discharge and the Exploited, was a different breed of Punk altogether although that is what the majority of people who are still involved in the punk scene consider to be real punk. But for those of us who were privelidged to be around for the 76 - 79 period The Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks, The Adverts, The Clash etc are the real punks and always will be.
Incidentally, THE Buzzcocks as they are always called is incorrect, they were called Buzzcocks with no the in front.
    Ian.
