TUESDAY - Will Young Saving Gorillas

Will Young makes an emotional journey to the heart of Africa where he sees two very different sides of gorilla conservation. In Cameroon, he visits a refuge caring for the orphaned gorilla victims of the “bush meat” trade. Then in Gabon, he sees for himself the success of preserving the gorillas’ jungle habitat.

Will is introduced to some of the orphaned baby gorillas, who just like human children, need individual care. For Will, this close encounter is a remarkable experience. He says: “The most bizarre thing is they look so human. I feel like I want to talk to them. It’s quite amazing to see something so similar to us and to think that they could be gone in my lifetime.” Will then embarks on a three-day expedition, following the signs of broken twigs and footprints, to track down the lowland gorilla in it’s natural habitat which leads to a rare encounter with a wild Gorilla family. It’s a moment, he says, he will always remember.

WEDNESDAY - Fiona Bruce Saving Tigers

In the last 100 years, the tiger has been driven close to extinction by poaching and the effect of farming on their forest habitat. Fiona Bruce investigates the fragile state of the Bengal tiger population and learns about an ambitious conservation project – Tigers Forever.

Riding an Elephant in Bandavgarh National Park, Fiona soon has a close encounter with three wild Tigers. Then it dawns on her, “If I can get this close, can a poacher?” A single tiger skin can fetch $16,000, and the pressure from the poachers to supply the international market with tiger skins is placing these beautiful cats in jeopardy. Fiona’s journey continues in Bangalore where she sees first-hand the problems that can occur when farmland encroaches on the tiger’s habitat, and meets the teams who have developed ways for people and tigers to co-exist.

THURSDAY - Edith Bowman Saving Crocodiles

Edith Bowman travels to the jungle marshes of South West Cambodia to learn about the importance of Siamese crocodiles to the local people, and how a combination of community work and high tech science is helping to save the species.

Edith is horrified when she visits one of the thousands of crocodile farms breeding the reptiles for the fashion industry. Huge concrete bunkers house a variety of crocodiles whose fine, soft skins are used for handbags and are worth $1,000 each. “I never thought that I could feel sympathy for crocodiles. It’s tragic to see any animal treated like this. Even worse – it’s trade is purely driven by fashion” she comments. Holding a small baby crocodile, Edith says, “There’s so few of these Siamese crocodiles left in the world and they’re kind of seen as the black sheep of the endangered species. People have complete misconceptions about this animal. They’re 65million years old and they have survived dinosaurs – yet it looks like they may not survive us.”

FRIDAY - Carol Thatcher Saving Albatross

Carol Thatcher revisits her family history and travels to the Falklands to the scene of a new battle – to save the black browed albatross. On her journey, Carol sees the wonder of the albatross first hand as she visits a nesting colony.

Despite the number of nesting albatrosses Carol witnesses, the population has been in steep decline with over 20% of the population being lost in the last 20 years. Across the world an albatross is lost every five minutes due to long line fishing. It is thought that 100,000 birds drown each year, which is a huge loss for this unusual species to recover from. Matching the albatross flight path, Carol travels from the Falkland Islands to the south coast of Brazil – an incredible journey of 600 miles which the birds fly in search of food. Here, Carol sees the work of the RSPB Albatross Task Force as they attempt to change the attitudes of some of the toughest fisherman – with great results.

SATURDAY – Phil Tufnell Saving Rhinos

Phil Tufnell travels to the Kaziranga National Park in India, home to 75% of the world’s Indian rhinoceros population, Phil discovers the challenges the forest guards face when he goes on night patrol with them – experiencing just how scary it is to be on the front line. The highlight of Phil’s trip comes when he takes and elephant ride through the park and gets within touching distance of a baby rhino and it’s mother.

Indian Rhino used to freely roam the flood plains of South Asia but now there are only about 2000 left in the wild. Weighing up to two tonnes, the rhinos are often killed for just a few kilograms of their weight – with many being poached for their horn, which is sold for use in Chinese medicine. Indian rhino are more valuable than gold, and patrolling the park is vital to their survival. It doesn’t take long before Phil starts to realise that while the rhino may be thick-skinned, beauty is more than skin deep. As he says; “they may not win any beauty contests…but that’s no reason to kill them off. I’ve seen them in their own back yard…they don’t ask for much from life and the least we can do is make things safe for them.”

If you send away for them you get a bonus DVD featuring Jack Osbourne Saving Elephants. Travelling through the desert, Jack sees elephants in their natural habitat and cannot help but fall in love with them. He comments; “like in a zoo, they seem tame. You want to run and give them a big hug”.

  • This has to be the exclusive of the year. The Mail on Sunday is to give away the new Prince album "Planet Earth" with a forthcoming newspaper sometime over the next month or so:

Anger at Prince free CD giveaway

The music industry has reacted angrily at a decision to give away the new album by US musician Prince with a tabloid newspaper.

Planet Earth will be given free with a future edition of the Mail on Sunday.

The 10-track CD from Prince - whose hits include Purple Rain, Sign O' The Times and Cream - is not due to be released until 24 July.

Paul Quirk, co-chairman of the Entertainment Retailers Association, said the decision "beggars belief".

"The Artist formerly known as Prince should know that with behaviour like this he will soon be the Artist Formerly Available in Record Stores," said Mr Quirk, referring to a period in the 1990s when Prince famously stopped using his name in favour of a symbol.

"It is an insult to all those record stores who have supported Prince throughout his career.

"It is yet another example of the damaging covermount culture which is destroying any perception of value around recorded music."

The practice of "covermounts" - where newspapers attempt to lure readers with DVDs and CDs - is used widely in the industry.

The Mail on Sunday's recent CD giveaways include Peter Gabriel, Dolly Parton, Duran Duran, UB40 and Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells.

Stephen Miron, the newspaper's managing director, said: "No one has done this before. We have always given away CDs and DVDs, but this is just setting a new level."

Mr Miron declined how much the newspaper had paid to secure the deal.
He added that the newspaper was not out to put music retailers out of business.

"They are living in the old days and haven't developed their businesses sufficiently. We can enhance their business. They are being incredibly insular and need to move their business on," he said.

But HMV chief executive Simon Fox has said it would be "absolutely nuts" to give the album away for free.

The company revealed on Thursday that its profits had more than halved in the face of cut-price competition from supermarkets and online retailers.
The deal has also led to the UK arm of Sony BMG pulling out of the distribution agreement.

"Given the sheer number of copies we are talking about here it seemed the right thing to do for retailers to become exempt from the deal in the UK," said a spokesman for Sony BMG, the world's second-biggest music company. Prince is due to play 21 concert dates in London later this year.
