  • Drinking man's diet I thought this was interesting.

    Beer (4.5%) per 100ml:
    Carbohydrates 4.1 g (2 g glucose, maltose 2g)
    Alcohol 3.5 g
    Protein 0.4 g
    Fat 0g
Which provides 43 calories, 39% from carbohydrates.
So most of the energy comes from sugar and has a high GI, this forces the body to raise insulin, obliges surplus glucose to be stored and keeps existing fat reserves locked in.

Compare this with the average wine (8-15%) per 100ml:
    Carbohydrates 0.5 g
    Alcohol 9g
    Protein 0.3 g
    Fat 0g
Which provides 68 calories, 3% from carbohydrates.

More calories, therefore, but only a fraction of the carbohydrate content (also consider standard serving sizes. We don't usually have wine in pint glasses.

Or hard (Vodka, Gin, whiskey, brandy) per 100ml:
    Carbohydrates 0g
    Alcohol 33g
    Protein 0g
    Fat 0g
Which provides 229 calories, 0% from carbohydrates.

Even more - lots of calories but none from carbohydrates.

  • Google translate version of a Swedish Low Carb recipe site
The writer of this food/cooking blog has co written a low carb cook book with Dr Dahlqvist's. While you have to use a bit of imagination/intelligence to grasp what the google translate version really means I think most of you can take a pretty good guess, while having a smile at the garbled English

  • Hey up, watched the Fat Head clips...interesting, so Spurlock was lying/exaggerating in order to make a point? Then I found the Malcolm Kendrick (The great cholesterol con) talk, which was like a revelation! I'm a nurse so I enjoy anything like that!:D

So Mon I'm gonna start this Paleo Diet, just read the book. Basically it's as much lean animal protein, fruit and veg as you want, so it's not strictly low-carb. You do cut out all dairy, grains and,of course, sugar though.

I'll follow this using the 80/20 rule though, cos I think it's easy for people to do in a rural area in a sunny state in America, with wide spread grass fed animals and easy availability of fruit and veg but I don't think Loren Cordain was thinking about people in the North of England, in the winter, in a recession!!;)

Not really feasible to go shopping for salad and fruit every couple of days. Mind, at least the bowel side of things will be taken care of, no need for supplements! LOL (will, however, be getting some vit D in)
Gonna incorporate a bit of Atkins as well, I think, for variety. I like the look of some of your recipes, you've posted (thinking choc cake and the famous oopsies instead of bread)
  • Just compiling my shopping list before I go on a hunting expedition to Morrisons. Does anybody know, in an American book, when they state e.g 400 degrees in a recipe, what the equivalent is? I've got an electric fan oven so I'm in degrees C.
