hello, i got a sony ericssson w760i with 02 as a upgrade yesterday.
its a good phone but i realized that 02 had taken off the google maps software and the wayfinder navigator software. the gps functions was one of the reason of me choosing this phone. has anyone experienced the same from other networks? or isit just 02. and if possible a link too where i can download the maps without using gprs.
thanks in advance

O2 have taken the software off the new c702 as well - in fact after complaints they amended their advertising of the phone to remove mentions of the software.
  • I was disappointed to find that on the C702, having just "down"graded from a troublesome N95! I can't add anything as the only ones I found were already listed here: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1015643

Will let you know if I find something else...
  • You have a few options.

I upgraded to the C702 based on the GPS and Google Maps. O2 had removed the Google Maps and although I installed it myself it was the generic Maps and didn't talk to the GPS. I installed Wayfinder Navigator myself and it worked well with the C702 though you do have to subscribe (I did the one month only subscription for 6.99 euros as I was fairly certain I'd be sending the phone back). One problem though is that it downloads the maps from the internet as you drive so unless you have the internet bolt on you may risk a big bill. Also, if you enter an O2 signal blackspot you'll lose your mapping which happened to me once!

However, as I was in my 14 day cooling off period (I upgraded over the phone, but I think you may get this in a shop too with O2) I sent the phone back as it didn't have all the features I wanted.

I then picked the Nokia 6220 Classic as it has Nokia Maps built in and it comes with the maps on the memory card so you don't need to worry about downloading maps on the move and losing your signal. It's free though you pay for the voice navigation. It works really well and is very accurate in my opinion.

However my handset had a problem with the keypad so it went back. A scan online found others with the same issue (it's a newly launched phone so maybe they haven't got it quite right yet!!) so I asked for a diff handset. After some umming and ahhing they agreed to give me an N78 which also has Nokia Maps preloaded, and happily has voice guided naviagtion thrown in so I don't have to pay extra. Overall I'm v happy with this handset.

So anyway, what I'm trying to say is if you are still within your 14 day cooling off period and are unhappy, send the phone back, and if you really want a sat-nav style phone, go for a Nokia phone with the maps preloaded. If they argue with you, try claiming false advertising, as when I got the C702 the website and in-store booklet both claimed that Google Maps was on the phone and worked with the GPS.
If this has been of any use please click on THANKS, it makes me look good.

02 said "purchasing the phone at this early stages after release, we were not able to install the software on our first order of sony ericsson w760i, as the phone gps software has to be installed by the network not the phone manufacturer"
    what a load of !!!!.
