...we were not able to install the software on our first order of sony ericsson w760i, as the phone gps software has to be installed by the network not the phone manufacturer
    what a load of !!!!.

the software from sony ericsson is sent out to the networks who then make adjustments to suit their networks (inc. removing things), then the networks approve it and flash it (with the adjustments) to their phones

ive got the same phone due to arrive tomorrow

I queired this missing software thing with them on saturday when i rang up and she said it was fine

ive seen emailed o2 and they've referred my query onto someone else, i'll probably have the phone though before they get back to me

say mine turns up without the software, is there a way or place of downloading it without having to send it back?

It is possible that a generic firmware will contain the Google Maps and Wayfinder software you require. You could flash it using the included cable and a flashing program, however this can void your warranty and you need to know what you're doing.

The usual place to find the firmware is TopSony.com, although you do have to pay a nominal sum (€2) for temporary access to the downloads. I usually look up the firmware versions there and try a Google search to see if anyone else has posted the files online :P

Safest way, though is probably to exchange for a model with the full GPS support or pester O2 to get the software installed.

cheers for the advice, will see if it comes with the software first (hopefully it'll will and i'll avoid all this!) and will probo do the last item you mentioned if it doesn't have it

at the end of the day its not on to say you're selling something which you're not so they wont have a leg to stand on, whether its a new product or not

They might have a leg to stand on if their own marketing doesn't list the GPS as a feature. If it is listed but not included it's illegal for them to advertise it as such anyway.

or if there are tools that can extract files from a db3150 filesystem (like you can do with db2020 fs files), you could try and get the apps that way
