I wouldn't get too excited, the last time there was a similar volcanic eruption with an ice cap melting into a volcano in Iceland and the ash cloud floating over Europe was in 1812 and there were no flights for over 90 years after that.
• Well update at my end! Flight was cancelled to Orlando yesterday. Sis wedding cancelled. Trying to rebook fir earliest opportunity and costing us extra £1321.42 extra for the privilege. Encountering various difficulties with Ttravel City as Tour Operator and Virgin as the flight carrier. Been advised elsewhere on MSE forums, shouldn't have to pay extra so spent all day ringing Air Transport Users Council, ABTA, Travel City and then researching all EU legislation and Package Travel Regs to include in the lengthy emails I have sent in complaint of additional charge. Just in case your interested LOL.

My brother has just booked his insurance (he is visiting with me this summer) and he had Kidney Cancer and onme company quoted £1,050.00 for his family and would not cover his Cancer, Wife & Dauyghters Astma, Wife' Back Arthritis. He found one (I think linked from McMillan site) coverd him and family AND ALL PEMC's for £104.50! I'll ask him wher he got insured and get back to you.

Im loving this invaluable post, have you managed to find out the name of the Company FH from your brother as I am interested for my Dad who has cancer and is thinking of coming with us to Florida in June.

Thanks.

OK, so here's ours. We are considering a month in Florida in December, en route to New Zealand from the UK (considering only as I don't know whether I'll get the job or what the exact timing will be!). Here are our pre-existing conditions:

Me: high blood pressure (controlled by medication), high cholesterol (no medication yet, under review), depression (on medication ... you might understand why as you read the rest!!!!)
OH: Parkinsons Disease (yes, it can happen to people in their 40s), high blood pressure (controlled by medication)
DS: Down Syndrome
DD: completely normal but with a tendancy to have minor accidents and complain of toothache unnecessarily

Are we likely to hit problems?
Mortgage started on 22.5.09 : £129,600
Overpayments to date: £3000
June grocery challenge: 400/600

My brother went to his local broker and got insured through Fortis.

The bit about a job in NZ, does that mean that you are emmigrating?
If so travel insurance (regular) is no good - you'd need to speak to the IC to get one way cover - and only a few (I know) will even cover you one-way. If you think that you'd just get cover and not tell them that you are not comming back, then they will find out, firstly your claim check you would ask to be sent to NZ, secondly they would probably (if the claim is a decent size) request travel date proof. (ON THAT point - anyone reading this = always keep your boarding cards - both ways - until you are home and know you are not making a claim)

You - Depression = speciasltis coverage = "usual" travel ins will not cover mental health. Blood pressure = no problem (Fortis will normally cover as long as you were not hospitalised within 12 or 24 months.)
Cholesterol is not a problem if you're not medicated but you need to declare that you are awaiting results.

OH - Specialist again - Try TIG.

DD DS = How old?

DD, Accident prone is not a medical condition! (However there are med conditions that can cause accident proneness (if that's a word!) == Toothache - most travel policies restrict dental coverage to pain relief ONLY, and then not many £££'s (£100 - 250 normally).

Try TIG (found by going to www.patient.co.uk)
http://www.theinsurancehelpline.co.uk/
I have no experience with them but try & let us know if they are any help.

Vix - Oh dear! where do I start.

1. Ash & flights - This is a known event and no insurer will cover this Volcano's erruptions. Insurance = against UNKNOWN events.
2. Stranded in Orlando (there are worse plaes to be stranded!) Again (see 1 above) if it is because of that you will not be covered. If you are covered then the insurer (taking you have a half decent IC) may cover accom, food and possibly basic car hire (enough for transport but not if you rent a Rolls Royce!).

However - some policies will NOT cover food, as you would have to feed yourselves if you were at home (and it's actually cheaper here). ALL of this doe depend treendously on the policy T&C's and as so many policies exist, it is impossible to tell from what you have put and my post is VERY basic indeed.

I have not heard of this Premiere insurance and (always being the "Eeyore" seeing the gloomy side of insurance) I am VERY concerned that they "don't ask"! IC's (poor ones) are renowned for giving excuses and denying claims because of PEMC's and I bet this company in the event of you making a claim will "link" your claim condition to one (or more) of your PEMC's.

Is this Premiere a UK based Insurer? (You said European).

Your opinion - "not pose a threat of needing emergency treatment " I bet your insurer does not think so. Gastric Bands (& all Bariatric Surgeries/Procedures) are considered a risk - albeit a small one compared to other PEMC's.

Cellulitis can flare up (with non-normal exposure to sun) andtherefore could be considered a risk.

When an IC says "you don't have to declare" I am very concerned that you have a poo insurer and the policy is worth "squat"!

My brother has just booked his insurance (he is visiting with me this summer) and he had Kidney Cancer and onme company quoted £1,050.00 for his family and would not cover his Cancer, Wife & Dauyghters Astma, Wife' Back Arthritis. Hi and thanks for the reply. Here is the wording from Premiere Insurance (http://www.premiertravelinsurance.com/)

Significant Exclusions
The most significant policy exclusions are: Medical conditions –. There is no cover for any medical condition for which you have received medication, advice, investigations or treatment for in the last 12 months, unless such medical conditions have been accepted by us in writing. Cancellation and curtailment claims relating to third parties are only covered provided they have not suffered from a medical condition in the last 6 months, or 6 months before the trip was booked (whichever is later). There is no cover for a trip booked or commenced against medical advice, or after receiving a terminal prognosis, or for the purpose of obtaining medical treatment or convalescent care. For full details please read Sections 1 and 2 Cancellation and Curtailment and Section 4 Emergency Medical Expenses of the policy wording.

Last time I used them I telephoned first and was told that as long as I had no medical consultation whatever in the last 12 months that I would be covered.

As your brother booked with fortis through a broker, can you do it direct, as that is a very good price. I have the worldwide insurance linked to my Halifax Ultimate Reward account but think to add my pre-existing would be extortionate. Thanks again for your help.

Hi FH Britt, I have just checked on the fortis website and it states the following:-

dialysis, had diabetes, dementia or any
other psychiatric or psychological
illness?
I declare that I am able to answer ‘No’
to all of the above questions.
If you can agree this declaration any
existing medical conditions will be
covered by this policy, therefore please
do not contact the Fortis Health Line
as you may be charged an additional
premium unnecessarily.
As all my conditions are old, my cancer 11 years ago and banding 6 years ago, and I only have routine check ups now, I would assume that I don't need to inform them of anything, as the last paragraph advises. Just need to find a local broker. Thank you for this recommendation.
