You may be best to have the camera covered on your home contents insurance as a specified article with cover away from the home.

I have just added my laptop to my contents insurance as a specified article away from the home and wasn't charged any extra as I did it at renewal and the additional cost was less than £5 for the year.

Hmmm, good point, I think I have £1500 for unspecified personal posessions away from the home. Do most people rely on their contents insurance to cover items like this that aren't covered by the travel insurance?
I can't see that my situation is that unusual?
    Thanks!

Yes it is quite common. You can get some travel insurance policies cheaper if you exclude cover for baggage.

Travel policies do not pay claims on a new for old basis (home insurers do) so the travel insurers will reduce the amount they pay you to take into account wear and tear on the camera

Just thought I'd add my experience onto here. We booked an annual policy with AA insurance. My wife has a number of pre-existing illnesses and they worked out cheapest. Anyhooo this trip we had to make a small claim as my daughter came down with chicken pox. We went to phoned the insurance help line who were most helpful. We went to one of the medical centres (Sand Lake Rd) and they faxed the details through to the insurance company (as suggested by the helpline) and all payments were made directly. We didn't have to hand cash over and reclaim.

Now I know this was only a minor trip to the doctor but it made the whole thing much less stressful for us knowing that the bills were automatically taken care of. Upshot of the story is that we will definitely be using the AA again.

Lex - call your insurers or see your broker, if your camera is an expensive one, you can always take out extra cover just for your camera/personal goods. To be safe than sorry is always the best policy.

Zola - I'm glad everything went smoothly for you, although (and I don't want to be the bearer of gloom) how do you know it all went through? Don't tell me, I know, your insurers said so! So many of my customers tell me this, the ONLY way you can be sure is to ask the medical facility if your bill is paid in full. So many UK tourists are shocked when they get my letters, because the insurers say they paid. Well here in Florida the medical billing system is very complicated and often you can generate more than one bill in only one visit. The Doctors, the actual facility, the Radiologist, the Ambulance, the Surgeon, etc etc all bill separately and sometimes the insurers tell the patient they have paid the bill and then there are others that remain unpaid.

The AA (not insurers, they only sell the policy) use Drakefield Insurance and they normally are very professional and helpfull. If you do get any more bills just forward it to Drakefield, I rarely have any problems apart from the usual time delays from them.

  • Hi FH Brit,

Have you ever had any dealings with Rock Insurance or insurefor.com (same company), they offer a very good worldwide annual deal via travelsupermarket.com. Always sceptical of insurers after reading your valuable thread.

Sure, Rock is a reputable company (my opinion based on my dealings with them) tyheir claims dept are professional, but slow. (slow seems to be the norm though)

Please make sur eyou have adequate cover, do not buy on price alone - see the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website for the country/area you are visiting for advice as to needed coverage also other good info.
