tried it with the chicken in yesterday, wasn't as nice, imo.
  • I don't think chicken gives the 'gravy' the oomph it needs - red meat works much better.

mm, will stick to beef from now on then. ;D
  • Well, I don't know if this is a bit too long after the actual event now, but I have a very good Goulash recipe that I thought I'd post. It comes from a cookbook called the 'Czech National Cookbook' by Hana Gajdostikova so I am guessing that it's pretty authentic. I'm not Czech btw, but we went to Prague a couple of years back and I adored the goulash, so thought I'd buy a 'proper' recipe book while I was out there. I made it shortly after we got back so I could see whether it was authentic tasting while I could still remember what the 'real' thing tasted like, (and it was) ;D It doesn't use tomatoes either, but it does use tomato paste....

    750g (1 1/2 lb) casserole steak
    400g (14oz) sliced onion
    6 tbsp oil
    salt and pepper
    sweet paprika
    marjoram
    caraway seeds
    5 cloves of garlic
1 small can of tomato paste or puree)
1/2 litre (1 point) hot water
1 slice of dark (preferably rye) bread

Cut meat into small cubes, chop the onion and slice the garlic. Brown the meat in the hot oil, add the onion and the garlic and brown off. Add the salt, pepper, marjoram, caraway, tomato paste. Simmer, adding hot water as needed. Cut the bread into small cubes, add to the goulash and simmer until the bread dissolves.

I left out the caraway once, and it didnt' taste anywhere near as authentic so I think it's the caraway that does it.

Anyway, recipe says to serve it with bread dumplings. The book does have a recipe for them as well, but it asks for a few things that I don't know what they are so I'd rather be safe than sorry and not post, don't want you blaming me for your dinner party disasters!! :o ;D
    I :heart2: Boots

I just made some Goulash with a recipe I found on the net, but it tastes a little bland. I know its supposed to be a simple dish, (only added paprika, onions, garlic, peppers and seasoning) but can anything else be added to give it a little kick?

    All ideas welcome!

Try adding some hot paprika, you can get it at any supermarket. Failing that if you need something now add a shake or two of tobasco or some chilli sauce - enjoy :)

Thanks, will try the hot stuff next time.

I added a little chili powder at the end to give it some oomph. I'm just trying out recipes that can be used in a slow cooker at the moment as I'm trying to save some money (moving in a month and my outgoings will be higher as a result).
