Salty71 wrote:Does anyone know any home made cleaning soultions that are safe for use with septic tanks? We have to be really careful about what we put down our drains etc as any anti-bacterial products harm the way in which the tank system works. Vinegar apparently kills 99% of germs/bacteria so I can't use it! Any ideas would be wonderful.
We used to live even further out in the sticks than we do now and were always having THAT sort of problem (bubble bubble pooh) . Never found anything reliable, so resorted to the occasional road-kill. OK so its gross but Hey! it works. Hedgehogs work best and there is usually loads around. Oh and rats. Which leaves you free to use the cheapest cleaning agents you can find. Vinegar by the sound of it.0 -
Does anyone Know how to steralise a matress? My daughter had an accident last night. Would steam be effective? Any ideas would be great as the matress was new last month.0

i started using soda crystals for most of my kitchen cleaning altho i do find that you sometimes need to rinse well to stop a white film covering. i first used them on greasy chip pan and the results were great the grease just disappears. another thing i would recommend is a mirco fibre cloth you can get these for as cheap as 80p in nettos they are great for washing up etc but i also know a dog groomer that uses them to towel dry her dogs so saving herself time whenblowdrying them
when we moved in our house the loo was a massive mess even the sides, the limescales was so bad you could chip it off  i used the vinegar trick but to do the sides i layered the bowl with loo roll and emptied 2 bottles of vinegar on to it. this held the vinegar to the sides while it did its work , i now have a super loo0 -
I too have a super loo, shiny hob, very clean floor, no soda crystals or chemicals of any sort, just ENJO fibres and cold water, check out their web site, fab products for all of your cleaning, better for your health as well as your pocket!0

Off to get my cleaning essentials when I shop this week!0 -
My washing machine is minging! The drawer and the rubbers are caked in gloopy simey stuff. The drum itself is clean but sometimes get marks on clothes when removing from the drum.
I think its a combination of the Water (hard I think) and detergent used at 40 degrees...
Any good tips for shifting it? I'd prefer not to add anything in with my normal wash, but run it empty or with something un-important.0 -
Try running it empty on a hot wash with white vinegar added to the softener compartment and soda crystals added to soap powder drawer.

Just been watching "Houses Behaving Badly" on UKTV Style and caught a great tip for using up left-over flat coke .... put it down the loo!!! (think it was to remove limescale) and leave an hour before flushing away
Another tip: use toothpaste for cleaning fridge/freezer - works as a gentle scourer as well as leaving a fresh interior!"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"
