I've just ordered two pairs of glasses from glassesdirect.co.uk for £45 - £15 each with lenses and I've got the anti-reflection on one pair which is £15 extra.

I havn't got them yet as I only ordered them last Friday and they reckon they take 10 days for delivery.

I hope I get them soon as I currently have sellotape on the glasses I'm wearing now and it's rather embarrassing!!! I went to a job interview yesterday and I'm hoping the didn't notice :embarasse (I have short hair:o )

you can 'try' on the glasses on their website ie: load up a pic of yourself and position the glasses on the pic - did provide some entertainment for 10 mins :D !!

This price range is definitely useful right now as I can't afford £100 + for new glasses from the places I normally go - I do want to buy a nice 'designer' pair at some point and I will be checking this site out for recomendations when I finally have some cash to do so :p

I'll let you know if I have any problems - hopefully not - and how long it took for them to be delivered.

Hello, can anyone advise? I've ordered before from selectspecs and was pleased with the service but my prescription has changed and at -9.00, they don't do my strength. The only retailer I've found that does my blindness and include thinner lenses which is important, is glassescrafter but the reviews seem mixed. Can anyone suggest other retailers or have you ordered from them and can review?

I found that if you contact the supplier they can be quite helpful sorting out the higher end prescriptions. Worth a few phone calls ao emails

with your prescription I'd be very surprised if any online supplier would touch it. The higher the power the more risks are involved in making your specs. You really need to be measured correctly (in a shop) for both the vertical and horizontal fitting of the lenses. I know this site is about moneysaving but sometimes you cannot cut corners.

Thanks for the advice Dan, but as I only wear glasses for a night a month or in emergencies since I use continuous wear lenses, I should be ok, my prescription has only increased by 0.5 and selectspecs worked out fine. It's just a shame they don't do any higher.

    Hi MsCrow,

I've used the the following two online companies. They both will do -9.0.
    I've had +8.0s from them.

http://www.39dollarglasses.com/ These were useless at answering e-mails so
you never knew what was going on. But delivered ok. Based in the U.S.A.

http://zennioptical.com/ Very good, polite communictions via e-mail and delivered ok.

    HTH.

    Good luck,
    Frank.

UK online spectacle retailers are prohibited by law from supplying glasses with what's know as complex prescriptions (as well as selling to under-16's and partially-sighted folk).

However, just because you think your prescription is 'strong', it doesn't necessarily follow that it's 'complex'.

Many online sellers will not deviate from the prescription limits they display on their sites. However - some will.

As sandy2 mentions, it's worth a phone call and/or email with your prescription details to the online company to check if they can indeed supply glasses with a high prescription - despite the limitations of their website.

Any website worth its salt should have a means of dealing with this scenario if it can be bothered.

Fashion Specs Direct regularly provide glasses outside of their 'online' prescription range. It can't always be done (eg., complex prescriptions) - but it's worth an email to check!

About this time last year, I ordered a pair of rimless glasses from www.selectspecs.com . As a rule, I wear contact lenses, but it's nice (and healthy) for the eyes to get a bit of a rest from these in the evening, so a pair of specs come in handy. I'm very short sighted with my eyes now topping double figures on the myopia scale. So, I wanted those very thin lenses which always cost a fortune at the opticians. Got a prescription from the opticians but they wouldnt give me the inter-pupillary distance (which you do need for ordering specs - and which needs to be very accurate when your prescription is high like mine). Also had trouble finding an online site to make some specs with such a high prescription.

But the company above did it, and did it extremely well...rimless glasses with thin lenses...absolutely spot on for about £90 (would have cost £400 at opticians).

As far as this inter-pupillary distance is concerned (the distance between the centres of your pupils), there are some online guides on measuring this yourself or you can just send in a pair of old specs for them to take measurements from (your prescription may change but unless you have a terribly unfortunate accident, the distance between your eyeballs shouldn't...and that's the bit that the opticians won't willingly give you (for obvious financial reasons)). They are obliged to give you the other information (prescription) on your eyes though.

Then managed to claim the total cost of the specs back through the health cash plan we've got! icon10.gif

Message to MsCrow - sent you a pm - selectspecs made mine last year, and I'm a -10! Would definitely ring them to discuss. They were really helpful with me.

    Thanks!

Got my new glasses on Friday - ordered the Friday before so they only took 6 days not incl Sunday).

Very pleased with them - I only got anti-glare on one pair so I might get the other pair done as it makes a huge difference (I work with Photography so I find it really obvious).

I even got compliments when I was on the tube which I've never got before.
When spending £200 in the past for glasses I always stuck to a 'safe' boring frames but as these were so cheap I thought I'd try some trendy frames.
They feel solid and I don't think they will break easy at all.

thanks to all on this MSE thread as I wouldn't have heard of this glasses website otherwise :D
