I agree, the sheer number of frames can be a downside. But I recommend going round the opticians and trying out a couple....especially from the designer frames (the generic ones are next to impossible to find on the web). Take note of the model number and search on the web.

I used to think there was a quality difference between the frames here and those abroad...it's definitely not the case(!). I saw one of the assistants open up the drawer and found them all in the cheap cellophane packing that is the same in other countries(!).

Before I make my order, how do you guys rate SelectSpecs.com?

I'm looking for a Police frame (model num: V2907) and can't find elsewhere  - SelectSpecs seems to be one of the few...any other suggestions is much appreciated :)

How long do they normally take anyway?

    thx for the help :)
  • I have just ordered mine from here

    http://www.specsdot.com/index.php

Good service when I emailed them and the process was fairly painless, considering it was my first time buying specs online.

I'm now the proud owner of a pair of Raybans for the nice price of 75.00 with lenses. :j

Picked up some cheap sunglasses from them too.

My father and I have bought several pairs from https://www.spex4less.co.uk

Every pair have been absolutely spot on. Register for a newsletter and you get a free tint or free antireflection coating ( a fancy anti refelection coating with UV and EMR filter built in).

Glasses are made in Bolton and generally returned within a week.

I have had less satisfactory experience with other companies. Please IM me if you want to know which ones.

I had a look at them and they seem awful.

If you enter your email to ask a question they take it and start sending you emails. You don't get to ask your question until much later.

Look very cheap, but I don't think you will get value for what little you pay. And the page seeking more francised agents doesn't smell good to me.

    Pass.

I have been wearing a pair from SelectSpecs for 3 months, I only wear them when I want to be able to see!! My left eye is -4.25, my right slightly less than that. I have had no trouble whatsoever with these and I got a pair of titanium flexible half rims for under £40.They were delivered in a hard case in a jiffy bag. The cheapest I could find the equivalent for on the high street was £150. I have also just had my transition lens glasses delivered from Goggles4U in 8 days. They seem perfectly alright (only got them this morning), have very high index lenses, cost under £20 and will make very good sunglasses, they have a spare pair of nose pads with them, and they came packed in cotton wool inside a hard case inside a polystyrene box! These Pakistanis know their packaging!

Could not disagree more greenfish. People I work with have bought from spex4less and have been similarly impressed. The frames are well manufactured and a £20 frame is about the same as a £50-75 frame on the hugh street. Remember prices do start at £15 fully coated and when you consider the price they are excellent.

They can source designer frames if people want them.

The owner of the business has been interviewed in a national newspaper about the internet optical boom and runs 2 opticians practices in Bolton.

I dont see anyproblem with a retailer seeking affiliate links.

I couldn't agree more, excellent company. Especially their 100% no quibble 12 month guarentee. I sat on my frames and the arm broke, they are in the process of replacing the frame FOC.

You would be hard pushed to find that service elsewhere!

    Hi folks,

I'm looking at purchasing some glasses online shortly to try and save some money because of my complex pescription. I was just wondering if anyone knew of an online company that did glass lenses instead of plastic? I've searched most, if not all of the ones mentioned in this thread but it seems no-one will sell glass lenses - only plastic.
    Advice appreciated as always!!

    Thanks

I am currently looking to buy some new glasses. My current ones are zeiss lenses and cost £400.00.
I really cannot afford to pay that again.
I was wondering if anyone knows if I can get them cheaper online anywhere?
Also wondering if pentax and hoya lense can have the same thinness as zeiss?
    Thanks

Zeiss tend to do lenses in power ranges above those which other manufacturers will supply. Trying to change from their varifocal or Aspheric lenses can cause adaption problems and as with any complex lens must be centred absolutely correctly to get the benfit. Not a DIY job over the internet !! Also many so called branded lenses are actually made to a name - Dollond & Aitchison make their own Nikon, Norville make Pentax for Specsavers !!

With a complex prescription you should never !!! try to have made up online. Exact centration is a must - even small errors in vertical or horizontal measurements ( which are affected by the angle the lenses sit to the face) may give headaches or even double vision. My advice - find a good local independent optician (forget the free eye test, second pairs / sunglasses etc of the high street chains) and pay tham to test your eyes and make the glasses. Any problems you only have one person to go back to. Ps most glass lense can now be matched in thickness by plastic - safer/lighter/ don't steam upas much. Thay are softer but much more durable trhan 10 years ago
