:T Wow!! Just seen this thread and it's taken me just over a day to read all of it. Many thanks to Weezl for all the inspiration....it certainly has been an eye opener on how much I've been spending on food for the four of us. I'm hoping to join you in your efforts...although I have a feeling my bottomless pit of a 5 year old may raise the spending threshold slightly :o I've now reserved a copy of Food For Free at the library so when it arrives we'll be having a go....and if we're successful then I'll get us a copy. Can't wait to start reducing my spending and joining in now....made cakes today as a starter for in hubby's lunchbox....

    Thanks freecycle :D

vegetarians and ISOM look away now,

I've been a makin' plans for the pig's head!

Apparently my first task will be to scrub him well. I have been disinfecting a nail brush today for this very purpose :D.

Then he must be rinsed and patted dry.

Then I'm to pour a kettle of boiling water over his head in a colander in the sink...

I plan to make a rub for the skin with salt, ground black pepper and chilli. The butcher will score the skin for me so that should work out nicely. He's also removed the eyes (thank the Lord!)

Then I place him in a roasting dish with some wine (leftover from friends coming round, and now slightly acidic, with honey, bay leaves and maybe some thyme or sage, not quite sure yet. I shall baste him with this as he roasts
    for 3.5 hrs!

How's it sounding so far? Total cost so far about 1p for salt and pepper.:money:

I may need to be a bit clever when thinking what to serve him with. Is mash acceptable?

Erm, another dumb question, is all of him edible?:o (other than bones!) and a final dumb question, how do I singe off his bristles? I've got some 10 inch long matches, will those work?

vegetarians you can come back now! and I hope I haven't offended you forever!

moanymoany does that all sound ok to you?

    Love nervous Weezl x

Thanks esselt and CW18 for the photo compliments. It's quite a deliberate strategy actually, to really try to make the foods look delicious. :D

It's my small :o way of trying to turn on it's head this thing I've been ranting about before, where TV programmes use very vivid, bright, saturated colour photography for (expensive) food. And so we all crave it.

Brings a new slant to DIY - as in Do It Yourself as a "food stylist" - thinking of that newspaper article I read recently pointing out all the "tricks of the trade" to give us those tempting-looking photos on the outside of readymeal packs - and then we open them and see a load of "glop":D

    - but in our Weezl's case its all "proper" food - and not served on teensy plates to "big it up" like what they do:D

I know you can make vegetable tartlets with a scone base made with flour, veg oil (instead of butter or marg) and water and filled with tomato sauce and some veg. I guess you could also add a bit of cheese or ham if you happened to have it. I bet they would be freezable and easily transportable.
I saw the original recipe in a dairy-free cook book (too much milk is bad for my nose!) which I no longer own and I cannot find a decent recipe online or in the index here but perhaps you could find one in a library book.

You know me - and my liking for "precise" recipes :D that sounds good to me (with cheese for myself personally - not ham - being veggie). Errrr....if anyone has a spare moment to work out a "precise" type recipe on this....'twould be ever so nice of you purlease;) :D

your dinner sounds nomnomnom Mary43! :T:T:T Your OH sounds very talented. I think tandoori chicken would be pretty hard to do on the Weezl budget, even with the morrissons 12.5p chicken portions!

Tandoori trotters might be a goer!
