The children are off school today, so I've made them a cooked lunch of Summer Vegetable Tortilla:

HG onions, potatoes, garlic, courgette, beans 0p
    Eggs from the hens 0p
Salad of HG lettuce, spicy leaves, basil, chive flowers, tomato 0p

Total cost 0p for 3 servings - the children have clean plates :D

Your story about furry food reminds me of when I made marmalade when I was about 14. It went into the garage, and when I came to take it out for the village show - it had gone mouldy on top. I scraped that off, replaced the waxed seal, and won 1st prize :rotfl: :rotfl:

I thought exactly the same when I saw it :)

(And I'm another that uses the cheapo bangers, though mine are from Mr T as I don't have a Mr A in walking distance or on a direct bus route.)

I used Mr T value bangers too most of the time and value cooking bacon :T

Penny Penguin :rotfl: first prize for mouldy jam! Even then you were a creative thinking OSer!

been pondering the 5 a day again....

Asda cauliflower is 3.84p per serving (one of your 5 a day) and their carrot and swede julienne is also good at 4.7p per serving (another of the 5 a day). Both are frozen.

I know the lack of freshness can bother us, but the government's 5 a day website likes frozen foods more because of retention of nutrition over the distance!

Just another couple of stats, helping us to get all our fruit and veg portions for the best value :D :j hopefully!

Not normally known for saying this, I know, but I've been getting bored with my lunchtime sarnie. Took 80g rice cooked, 100g sweetcorn and a jollop of mayo in my sandwich box today. A 10p lunch. Not so good as the sarnies, but great for variety! When my salad has come on a bit more, I'm thinking of making tortilla and having them wrapped with salads.

The 19p pasta quills for 500g feel like they could be the basis of some cheap and cheerful lunches too....

Other ideas for lunches under 10p gratefully recieved! Wondered about a potato salady thing....

Mr Weezl now on 2 sarnies and 2 cup cakes for lunch, and double puds in the evening. But his workmates keep saying he's lost weight. Hmmmmmn need to get my thinking cap on again!

    Love Weezl x

But are his trousers falling down yet? If not, then I wouldn't worry about it too much.....

I lost a lot of weight 5-6 years back, which then all went back on over the following 12 months. When I tried losing again since people kept saying I was losing it -- when I was only holding steady...... came to the conclusion they were seeing a 'weight loss' just by looking at the 'lack of quantity' in my lunchboxes compared to what they were eating

a warning to everyone about RICE. it contains very nasty food-poisoning bugs [ name of which escapes me]. Basically this amounts to cooking rice, eating it hot them if you must keep any left over chill as soon as it is cooked in ice water and refridgerate straight away. if you are going to do a fried rice thing with it each and every individual rice grain MUST be heated through very well.
I didnt know this until fairly recently when I took my food hygeine in catering certificate. i'd been saving rice and eating it for years but now consider myself very lucky not to have made myself ill.
its like raw poultry, nasty, I wouldnt eat a salad which has raw chicken juice dripped on to it, neither would I eat left over rice anymore.

HI zarazara...yes, my daughter managed to poison her husband's packed lunch by giving him "iffy" rice (not fatally, thank goodness). She now, like me, chills rice quickly but I have then happily frozen it and reheated it once defrosted. I think as long as you have done the quick chill thing and, as you say, make sure it is reheated thoroughly, then it's fine.

I certainly wouldn't reheat it more than the once though, which is what my daft daughter did

Weezl, I've been hugely enjoying the lentil pate with cold pasta for lunch. I like to add some finely chopped raw veg as well - it's never quite the same twice.

I know you can make vegetable tartlets with a scone base made with flour, veg oil (instead of butter or marg) and water and filled with tomato sauce and some veg. I guess you could also add a bit of cheese or ham if you happened to have it. I bet they would be freezable and easily transportable.
I saw the original recipe in a dairy-free cook book (too much milk is bad for my nose!) which I no longer own and I cannot find a decent recipe online or in the index here but perhaps you could find one in a library book.
