Re: fabric conditioner -- I'm another doesn't use.... I haven't for years. Apart from anything else it's one more thing to trigger hubby's eczema!
Don't use the 'sheets' in my tumble drier either, much to the disgust of a lot of work colleagues and friends (and yes, I still use that -- but mainly for towels and bedding unless the weather is like it is now and rains for days, in which case it gets anything that we need that will go through)Cheryl0 -
weezl sorry if it's already been stated but does the head include the brain? (poss dim question i know!)
i've just told my husband and he'd be quite willing for us to have that. but it won't be him preparing it! and hmm would it fit in a range?
ISOM I use an easiyo, just use a tbs of the previous batch of yoghurt as it's cheaper and saves me remembering to put a little tub on the shopping list, a litre of UHT milk, a little bit of powdered milk. you can thicken the yoghurt by straining it through a muslin for a few hours, makes more of a greek yoghurt if that's what you're after?0 -
I have an Easiyo 'somewhere' that I bought about 6 years ago, but have never used it without the packet mixes !!Cheryl0

WIth my new diet I eat it by the tub so suss I'll save about 80p a tub which means it will pay for itself in under 10 tubs which is great. I want to make it from scratch and did have a squizz but was a tad confused by various recipes! Can anyone give me step by step instructions & measurements (ie not "up to the line..", whac a bit in" etc as a new yog maker I know that would be a disaster! ). Would be much appreciated! Also does anyone know if you can make HM fromage frais?!
1 ltr skimmed UHT (49p basic brand asda, sains, lidl)
2 tbsp skimmed milk powder (thickens it)
1 tbsp 'live' yog as a starter.
Use can use the yog you make for the starter for 4-5 next times before needing to refresh.
I asked for an easiyo on freecyle and got one within an hr (I reckoned that yog makers were one of those gadgets many had gathering dust in a cupboard.) Usual price 13.99 but lakeland have an offer on at £9.20.
Going to try straining some with muslin to make own greek yog too.
Goodluck
Loving this thread I have just found and learning lots...I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once0 -

Errr....<cough> watabout kefir instead of yogurt? Same difference health, etc wise for starters. So - on t'one hand you could make yogurt with a vacuum flask (cheaper than a yogurt maker and more versatile) and no electric to "keep it going". On t'other hand - make your own kefir. Gotta be easy...done it myself....no problemo. Would offer to send you some kefir culture - but at moment its languishing in freezer and not sure if its even "alive" still...will experiment and see at some point.
so - kefir links:
try googling for "Dom's Kefir in-site" - its currently the 5th and 6th thing that come up when one googles "kefir" - cant get that link to work - but you will get it this way
and
www.kefir.net/
Not up on the 2nd one - its the first one I have read through - as its been the "main" one available to date at time I got into it.0 -
watabout kefir instead of yogurt?
Generally speaking, I am wildly adventurous with my dairy products, but kefir is really not for me. Yoghurt is much nicer (a million times nicer, according to my rigorous statistical analysis), and really not difficult to make. And yoghurt doesn't make you feel sick, which is always a plus in a food product.
Edited to add: I use an EasiYo. I have always used their sachets in it, but I'm going to try doing it from scratch when I run out of sachets in a week or two. I used to have an electric yoghurt maker with dinky little glass pots in it that worked really well for yoghurt-from-scratch, but only made small quantities. And before that, I successfully made yoghurt by putting the mixture in a bowl into a very cool oven, turning off the heat and leaving the bowl overnight with the light on. Yoghurt making is fun -- just be prepared to experiment with how long you leave it to sit, because the taste changes and gets more acidic as time passes. So if you don't like the flavour of the first batch, try shortening the time for the next batch. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. thanks for those recipes eselt...i didn't realise mackerel was so versatile.
I'm going to have to look into yoghurt making. DD6 has goat's yoghurt but its proving harder to find at our local supermarkets. Is it quite easy to make in a flask? I don't really want to have to invest in extra gadgets.
I've made another batch of the no knead bread and I'm delighted with it. Where do people get their flour from? Weezl costs her flour at 55p for 1.5kg. 1.5kg at Mr T is 93p for wholemeal. I've been mixing it half and half with strong white which brings it down to 71p (I think). when I used the breadmaker I would put some ordinary plain flour in but no sure if the no knead would turn out ok that way?weaving through the chaos...0 -
On the piggy front i used to like nibbling on sliced pigs ear, until i knew what it was..then i got over it! My fav, was a roasted hog on a spit, it really a lot of it left.
Today, HM fish fingers,
Cod cooked and sliced, rolled in bread crumbs and spices..30p in total as used frozen cod fillets.
HM made wedges, we usually cover in olive oil ( 2 tbsp) and paprika and peppercorn mix-22p for potatoes, olive oil about 3p?( Aldi virgin olive oil)
Pud was jam sponge..sorry ISOM..didn't make the cake, wll do tomorrow! This worked out at about 30p
so evening meal 88p ish..cod may be slightly more expensive to buy now, and i only used 2 fillets out of about 12!
breakfast- weetabix-10p, milk-33p, dinner was veg soup-50p HM No bread today, and also had melon ( I didn't have sponge cake-from aldi 69p range-30p)
so barring an attack of the munchies=all in budget £2.14..i have also been drinking herbal HM tea, so that has been free but could add 5p for Mr.B probably less!Blackadder: Am I jumping the gun, Baldrick, or are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation?

I use Aldi and Tesco's but have also used Asda for flour all very reasonable.
Aldi had the organic dove flour in at christmas, and sadly i am coming to the end of it..trying to be inventive over what i have in cupboards..far too much:rotfl:Blackadder: Am I jumping the gun, Baldrick, or are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation?
