Hi
I have been lurking for a while and have to say this thread is great I am going to try out the lentil pate and chicken pate from the other thread as my children will all have to go packed lunch in September now I am working so I am hoping to save a fortune compared to School dinners I already batch cook and make my own ready meals to take to work.
Thanks for the great threadSlimming world Journey started 11th January 2012 weight lost 16.5lb:j long way to go yet but only 3.5lb to my club 100 -
Today has seen a good start, with OH bringing home food from a friend's house that they won't eat (they have this strange OCD thing going on whereby if a food is within about a month before of its sell by date, they "can't" eat it), that I am incredibly grateful for!!
Ohhh wish I knew people like that, haha. Strange behaviour though..."Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without!!"Nov NSD: ?/30 Nov Make 10 Day ?/300Get Rid Of Debt: ?/2000 !! :mad:0 -
great idea about using copper pipe around a raised bed. I told OH about it and he said "yeah, I'd already thought of doing that"!
very intrigued by the whole snail debate too. I love mussels, winkles and things like that (which I know many wouldn't eat) so why not snails - especially when they are so abundant in our garden. what about slugs though? are they just snails without shells, or is there a difference (apart from the fact one has better PR)weaving through the chaos...0 -
Good Lord! I don't check the thread for 2 days and a hundred posts are added?! How am I supposed to get any work done at work?!
Thanks again to whoever posted the coconut loaf recipe. I halved the quantities, added the zest of 2 lemons and the juice of 1 and substituted the milk for water (taking into account the amount of fluid added by the lemon juice) and baked it in fairy cake cases - 12 tasty firm buns (ho ho) to go in my work packed lunches. Bit more expensive but still reasonable if you discover some cheap lemons (which I did by going to the market at the end of the day!)0 -
Good morning! :hello:
It's brilliant to have so much company on our strange little journey, I really love knowing there are like-minded folk out there, even though some of you are half a world away!
Plum pie the lemon buns sound fab! Can I tempt you to do a little cheeky maths? How many pence for a bun?:D
phizzimum, slugs! pleurghhh! I really don't think I could! Honestly I think I'd rather munch on a cow pat!:rotfl:hoping t'budget never has to get quite that severe!
Hiya and welcome:j Ukbull, would freezing all the sandwiches in batches help with the packed lunches issue? Might be a lot to do in the mornings otherwise!
Hello too, and welcome to hypno:hello:. It'll be great hearing all your tips and thoughts...
HMKN and jo1972, I too am intrigued by this 'ere, 'nose to tail' eating. Just unsure how you go about broaching your request in the butchers shop! Me and Mr Weezl were thinking about going to one locally on Saturday to ask about blood, ears, cheeks and the like.... But then we chickened out!
We will persevere though!
zoegirl, well done on the biscuits! Free food- can't fault it!:T:T:T Like the egg souffle! Does it come out a bit like fluffy french toast?
jcr16 Hello :hello:. My Slo cooker is a 6.5 litre (very big!) one made by Bush. An unfortunate incident occured when I told my friends at work about it, but that story's on the other thread!:D:o
BARGAINHUNTER, Yep, vampiric addiction is right, I do freeze all my curries. Freeze pretty much everything actually! It's how I conduct what I like to think of as 'glut management' :rotfl:
Bunny200, 4th on Google eh?:o:o:o I'll google you now!:D
Hazzie123- welcome and good luck with your challenge too! Post how you get on, I'd love to know;):T
We spent yesterday constructing another raised bed, mostly for lettuce. But like shaz, have nowt to fill it with. So I'm gonna do as Ceridwen suggests and see if the council have any compost going... Worth a try!
Day 7 of the challenge, and no over-budget days so far. And quite a few under budget ones :T:T:T.
Love to you all,
Weezl x

Go for it! Sure you will manage it OK.
There's bound to be some foraging still to be had along the way, I think lots of wild brambles for your vit C and antioxidants.
Still wish DH was as [strike]adventurous[/strike] tolerant as yours with his food. Mine pours loads of vinegar on salads, but wouldn't even eat the cucumber I pickled for him as he said it was 'past its best' .
Made my first yogurt last night, but he said he'd have the real one.
Good luck.
Zzzzz
Tell him that your yoghurt IS real - much of the rubbish sold in the shops is not! Why is it always the men that are such brand babies?! Felt like shooting one in Tesco the other week cos he was giving his wife such a hard time about buying the cheaper version not the brand!"there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0 -
Sorry Weezl, but you've mentioned the slow cooker story a couple of times recently, and though I guessed at the general idea of it, I had to do a search.. :rotfl: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=12060327&postcount=1434Debt@16.12.09 £10,362.38, now debt free as of 29.02.2012."I cannot make my days longer so I strive to make them better."0

Big big thanks to Niddy, sorely missed from these boards..best cybersupport ever!!0 -
Morning..(just! )everyone, start of a new week on the challenge...I can honestly say hand on heart..no snails, or slugs will be on my plate,..unless they creep in the lettuce or have made it past the minefield of blue pellets and coffee grounds..or my boots!
So costed some bits...
Mr.B's sandwiches for 12 days..are working out at 6p per day, 13p whoopsie bread, 60p whoopsie ham..v.nice as is proper stuff.
scones about 2p, reckon smaller ones would be 1.5p..they do scoff em at the same rate.
Will add up all later.

I usually go a bit pink, but never actually ask for a free handout. I usually buy something like sausages (I know they're not as cheap as supermarket, but we don't eat very much meat and I try to buy free range etc when I do) or the piece of belly pork with the bone in (they would weigh it and charge you before they remove it anyway, so it doesn't cost more) and then ask if they have any trotters. The lovely butcher on a farm I've just found came out of his store with 2 trotters and 2 tails and said they were free. He asked if I'd tried ear, because he was so chuffed someone wanted more than the usual cuts, and went off to get 2 of those and cut them off with a large chunk of cheek, I suppose it would be. Also free :j .
Do try to go in when they are likely to be cutting up the carcasses (start of the week usually) otherwise thay may have been bought or binned
I do feel that if you (one) eat meat, you should be prepared to eat pretty much any bit. I know some people really don't like liver, for example, and that is fair enough, I just think people shouldn't turn their noses up at the more squeamish making cuts, IYSWIM. Especially as they are usually the cheapest ones!
That's good theory, and I do try to hold to it, but I am having to psyche myself up a bit to tackle tongue, my next project (the children had pressed tongue in their sarnies the other week and loved it!) and I can't bring myself to cook a head yet, though I would serve brawn if I had it.
FWIW, I'm vegetarian, so I actually only foist these recipes on the rest of the family (DH, DD1 age 9, DS age 7 + DD2 age 4) :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
They all agree with me though, and are willing guinea pigs!!
I'm off to work in a mo, so I'll post some recipes later.
