    Hello Folks!

Glad you enjoyed your B'day Bash a la Weezl-style ISOM ...& hope you're healing well too.

Just to add my tuppence to the whole Budget debate if I may  Altho I appreciate you are keen to save as much cash as is possible, especially now you have a bubbs to finance too, you should also be aware of how much you need to sustain your essential nutrient intake to tide you over the next 18 MONTHS. This will be even more of a priority if you intend to breast-feed.

Being a mother before & after the event gives your body one helluva battering & I'm 100% certain that Acetate would prefer you to be a Healthy--as opposed to slighty more Wealthy--Weezl. That's it--I've said my piece :p

Many Congratulations to you both, & I look forward to all the geeky bits about being up the duff :D

Seems funny seeing it referred to as mine -- in the family we call it Grandma's marrow chutney

Your Grandma wouldn't be Mrs Metcalfe from Yorkshire, would she? Looking through my book with the green tom chutney in, there's a recipe for marrow chutney with the same ingredients although different proportions. Or maybe your Grandma used to read the farmers weekly?

Either way, I'm sure we're going to like it so much, there's no chance of it getting to you- sorry!;)

    Hi all,:hello:

Hope your sunday is going well. Thanks for all your congratulations and good thoughts. :D:A

I have taken on board all the thoughts about nutrition, thanks for those too.;)

I agree with all of you that I must put health first, for myself, AM and Fergie. That was definately the purpose of the challenge!:T

I think I shall research if it is possible to do this healthily, and allow myself not to stick to budget if it's not, IYSWIM?

This is just the same as if it hadn't been possible to make enough treats for Acetate Monkey on the budget, it'd have to shift too.
    :D

what I've found out so far...

    Energy

In theory, the energy cost of pregnancy is around 80,000 calories. Most of the extra calories are required in the last trimester of pregnancy and are estimated to be around 300kcals extra each day.

I have definately been eating more than this, finding myself ravenously hungry for the whole of the last 2 months! Perhaps I shall cut back a little bit now to compensate, I reckon I've had all my 80,000 calories already!!!:EasterBun Big fat trouser popping pig Weezl that I am!

    Protein

Most people eat more than enough protein so there's no need to increase my protein intake.

    Fibre

It's particularly important to eat more fibre in pregnancy to avoid the common niggles of constipation and piles. I need to Increase fibre intake by eating lots of fruit and vegetables, wholemeal bread and cereals, brown rice, wholemeal pasta and pulses. I should also drink more, because increasing fibre intake without enough fluids can exacerbate constipation. I think my daily eggs for breakfast have probably been a bit unhelpful too!

    Folic acid

This is particularly important before conception and during the first trimester of pregnancy. Mothers who lack sufficient folic acid are at increased risk of having a baby with a neural tube defect, such as spina bifida.
From the moment you start trying to conceive until the end of week 12 of your pregnancy, a daily 400 microgram supplement of folic acid is recommended.

These supplements should be in addition to dietary intake, which should be about 200 micrograms per day. Boost your folic acid intake by choosing foods such as:
    • cabbage, broccoli, spinach, Brussels sprouts, spring greens, kale, okra and fresh peas
    • chickpeas, black-eyed beans and lentils
    • wholemeal and wholegrain breads
OK so that's pretty well covered, from my normal diet, and I've also been taking supplements. :D
    Iron

Many women have low iron stores. I will be measured twice for iron during pregnancy. Once in a full blood count at my scan (results not back yet) and again at 26 weeks. Pregnancy anaemia is obviously not a good idea since it leads to dizziness and exhaustion, which is already par for the course!

Good sources can be split into two categories: meat-based (haem) and plant-based (non-haem). The body doesn't absorb iron from non-meat foods as easily as it does from meat sources. You can enhance iron absorption by including a source of vitamin C with your meal. In contrast, tannins found in black tea reduce the absorption.

    Vitamin A

Although liver is a good source of iron, it also contains very high concentrations of vitamin A. If taken in excess, this can build up in the liver and harm theunborn baby. This can cause cranial neural crest deformities.

The Department of Health advises all pregnant women and those trying to conceive to avoid liver and liver products. Some vitamin supplements and fish liver oil supplements are high in vitamin A.
So it's down with the pate and the liver and bacon casserole for a while alas... :o

    Vitamin D

Vitamin D is essential for forming and maintaining healthy bones and teeth. It's found in only a few foods, including fortified margarines fortified breakfast cereals, oily fish and meat.

Current recommendations are that all pregnant women should take a 10 microgram supplement of vitamin D daily.

This is in my diet, and in the supplement I've been taking.

Well that's all well and good, but what if, like me you just can't face certain things, and become very selective? :D

My current plan to avoid nausea is to eat stuff I fancy. This seems mostly doable within my new £1 budget, but we'll see how well it lasts!
Just a few thoughts to be going along with... Will be back with more geeky musings later....

    Love to you all,

    Weezl x

Argh!!!!! Evil evil work!!!! It has 'apparently' been the busiest sunday of the year, and you know when your thinking, no s**t sherlock, and I've had the fun of staring at little bits of green, yellow and purple and blue bits of paper, for the best part of SIX hours!!!!!!! ARGH!!!!!! I hate work paperwork!!!!!

*shake self* okay, well, I think I'm over it now....yep rant over.

Congrats Hmkn:T , to you, your family and friend....I love sponge when its warm and gooey, so I'd have given you full marks.

ISOM - I think reason number seven is the single greatest argument of all times, I use it to win as many as possible (it usually gets me the 'weird' look, and the arguee decides it best just to give in, smile nicely and walk away slowly)

And can I just say YAY FOR GEEKY MUSEING!!!! MAY THERE BE MANY MANY MORE WHERE THEY CAME FROM! (and even if I can't, just did):p

thanks ashia and shaz for missing the geekiness:D, it's been hard holding it all in, I kept thinking, 'oooh I must tell the girls about....', and then remembering how bad it would be if anyone from real life found out about Fergus via the internet:eek:!

Can I ask a bit of advice from anyoone who's had kids/is more practical than me? (sorry this is a bit off topic:D).

Once the lodgers have gone, the room that was their upstairs kitchen will still have our combi boiler, and a washing machine in it (I'll freecycle the gas oven and fridge freezer!) next to the washing machine is a little belfast sink roughly a foot and a half by a foot.

If you already had enough bedrooms, do you think an upstairs laundry room is a good idea with kids?

I'm thinking that the stuff we do that needs it, bedding, towels, clothes, we usually use and change in the upstairs of the hose anyway, so why lug it up and down the stairs;)? Or is this a daft idea?

Would the sink be quite useful for rinsing out things which have had a little poo accident as well? (I'm thinking Fergus rather than Acetate Monkey!:o) Before they go in the wash?

We could turn the room into a spare bedroom, but we've got one, and can't move the boiler in the upstairs kitchen and it's quite noisy so the guest would get woken up!

Please tell me if this is a really daft idea!

    Hiya Weezl

Well - I reckon it sounds like you're gonna go with the consensus of opinion re you and Fergus equals two people. What do I know about pregnancy? I never have been - but if its gonna double the appetite temporarily then I reckon that sounds about right. I've heard the thing too that the baby takes what nourishment it needs first and the mother-to-be gets whats left. We dont want you following that idea of decades ago I read about that mothers- to-be lose teeth - obviously a thing from their inadequate nutrition. We dont want you losing any bits and pieces our Weezl;) .

I'm not sure how well I put it when I was discussing your 50p budget v. inflation with ISOM yesterday - as my maths aint great. But t'point I was making (and our ISOM duly saw my point and we're in agreement we are - so consider yourself duly "ganged up on" m'dear:D ) is that you decided it was to be 50p per person at the beginning of the challenge. As I pointed out to ISOM - 50p back then has to be uprated to be in line with food price inflation since and I thought 'twould suit your Inner Geek if you found out what percentage food on average has increased by since the beginning of this Challenge and add that to 50p to come to a figure that would be equivalent to what 50p was then.

e.g. say food inflation has been 25% since then (I dont know exactly how much it has been - but for the sake of argument). Then 50p in equivalent terms now would be:

    50p + 25% of 50p = 62.5p at September 2008 levels.

So Mr Weezl counts as 62.5p per day and you and weezlette count as 2 x 62.5p (or if you think pregnancy doesnt count for double rations of food - then 1.5 x 62.5p. So:

    Mr Weezl = 62.5p
    Weezl = 62.5p
weezlette (via our Weezl) = 31p - 62.5p (depending on what calorie demands he/she has of their own)

There - have I explained what I mean suitably? I know what I mean - and so did ISOM when I explained my reasoning (useless maths or no on my part).:D

OOOOh - my brain hurts whenever I start trying to work out figures....;)

Blogs of mums --- I very rarely read blogs (hate the bottom to top format), but sometimes wander over for a read of this one

She had a crazy eBay auction a while back, and people found her through that -- and it got mentioned on the papercrafting forum I'm a member of as one for a good laugh

Definitley !! And if you're worried about Fergus getting in, then that's what bolts and stair gates are for (we use stair gates in door frames as well as at the top and bottom of stairs)
