ps- these are even batter bang for your nutritional buck, £2 for 1kg dried prunes, so that's only 4p for one of your 5 a day. And good for pregnancy constipation (ahem, I hear.....:o)

I can eat these till they come out of my ears, they don't make me *go* :o

    But they're tasty anyway :D

Just finished totting up the cost of our cooked meals for August -- so it's time for my monthly geekiness.

June - average cost of 76.116p per person per main meal with 13 meals above average, which I thought was fairly good as I've previously budgeted at an average of £1 (when I wasn't totting everything up precisely, and didn't have time to shop around for all the best deals or all the Whoopsies either)

July - average cost of 68.5428p per person per main meal, with 11 meals above average. This equated to a reduction of 9.95% on the previous month, but was helped by the fact elder son was home for 3 weeks -- and some meals I used packets/jars that I'd have used all of for three of us, but made it do 4.

August -- I had this month written off for making any savings, as the plan was to use various bits and bobs 'from stock' that I knew I wouldn't be able to afford to replace. But I went ahead and costed anyway out of interest. End result is
Average cost of 65.5431p per person per main meal, with 16 meals above average.
This equates to a reduction of 4.38% on last month (or 13.89% on June).
Think I'm going to have to look through what we had very carefully, as with over half the meals being above average and still seeing a reduction, that must mean we had some seriously cheap meals somewhere in the remaining 15 days :rolleyes2

Still have loads of stuff in the house that won't be replaced, so I think September (and possibly October as well) may also only see small reductions. But any reduction is better than none -- and most definitely better than an increase !!!

    Congrats Weezl and AM.

My County Council gives away £100 of cloth nappies and nappy stuff - West Sussex. I know others do similar things so worth checking your out.

I think the separate laundry room is a good idea. Dirty nappies waiting to wash can be kept there. You can have a drying rack from the ceiling or walls - one side to the other.

Amy Tightwad has interesting things to say about nappies - she tumble dries hers to make them soft. I think it would be worth testing if you could get away with say, 10 minutes tumbling.

I do wonder if fleece would make nice nappies?

PS the best addition to food to ease the passage is soya bran. It is fine, so easier to eat, and it works BRILLIANTLY!

As requested here's the recipe for Spiced Prune Cake. I now make it into little fairy cakes to put in packed lunches, but originally I used to make it up in an 8" round cake tin. Someone else on here originally made up the recipe for me but I can't find the post now and this recipe is in my ex's shorthand so it might not make much sense :rotfl::rotfl:

    Spiced Prune cake

    6oz butter (175g)
    6oz sugar (175g)
    8oz Self-raising flour (225g)
1 heaped tsp ground mixed spices
    3 eggs, beaten
Tin of prunes (or whatever you have in)

    1) Preheat oven to 150C
    2) Cream butter & sugar together
    3) Add flour & spices
    4) Add eggs and mix
    5) Break the prunes up slightly and add to mix (add a little of the juice as well if you like) stirring gently
    6) Pour into a tin & bake until cooked (about an hour)

    Very tasty

Once the lodgers have gone, the room that was their upstairs kitchen will still have our combi boiler, and a washing machine in it (I'll freecycle the gas oven and fridge freezer!) next to the washing machine is a little belfast sink roughly a foot and a half by a foot.

If you already had enough bedrooms, do you think an upstairs laundry room is a good idea with kids?

I'm thinking that the stuff we do that needs it, bedding, towels, clothes, we usually use and change in the upstairs of the hose anyway, so why lug it up and down the stairs;)? Or is this a daft idea?

Would the sink be quite useful for rinsing out things which have had a little poo accident as well? (I'm thinking Fergus rather than Acetate Monkey!:o) Before they go in the wash?

We could turn the room into a spare bedroom, but we've got one, and can't move the boiler in the upstairs kitchen and it's quite noisy so the guest would get woken up!

Please tell me if this is a really daft idea!

When I had an earlier house, some years ago. I had an additional kitchen upstairs, I did exactly that and turned it into a laundry room! It was fantastic and I wish I could do the same in this house. I mean at the end of the day I dont see the point of dragging clothes, bedding etc downstairs to just have to wash, dry and take it all back upstairs. Seems a pointless exercise......just my humble opinion of course!!

Thanks for the haws recipe. A friend and I were wondering what we could do with them. I meant to go foraging but the weather was not good enough!

Had a relaxing frugal time this weekend - bulk shopping and cooking means I have been able to avoid the supermarket recently, just picking up the odd piece of veg in my local corner shop. I made some crisp, light ginger biscuits on Sunday night but I need to refine the recipe before I post it though!
