Sian I know weezls would love anything thats home made...I suspect that most of us on here are likeminded in that we love the fact that the person has put time and move into whatever they have made..be it cake. knitting, sewing, whatever! I have instructions for a mini book somehere...if you look on uk scrappers there is bound to be loads of inspiration! When do you move?

I'm so jealous of all these crafty types, other than my cooking, I don't really have a crafty bone in my body. I'd love to knit something sweet for wee fergus(ita) or sew something, those who can are seriously blessed with their gift. My best offer is to put together a resource book of baby medicines and stuff (I work in a pharmacy and could pump the pharmacists for info, though would have to check it against the welsh guidelines coz I'm in merry old England). Your welcome to it if your own geekish tendencies desert you.

P.S The menu sounds gorgeous, is the recipe for the tandorri about? Sounds yum.

Another lurker leaps out of the closet to say congratulations to Mr & Mrs Wezel. Fantastic news and please up the budget or we will only worry.

ISOM - can't help with the costs as the price of food here is shocking so not accurate for you mainland people. i will however add that i've made that recipe many times and it is truly scrummy. I also love the winter storecupboard cake (I think it's called that) made with a tin of plums and almonds. Not very MSN but gorgeous. I think it's a fantastic book with lots of lovely recipes. Enjoy.... And Happy Birthday!!

I knit, I cross-stitch, I can do "normal" sewing (though it's a while since I did - I made the bridesmaids dresses and page boy outfits for our wedding), I've been known to crochet (although my limit these days is probably the 'squares' that start with a circle for making blankets!), and about 28 years ago I even did lacemaking (think I still have my pillow and bobbins somewhere, but wouldn't know where to start without some refresher lessons from my Mum) and spinning.

But these days I'm primarily another paper crafter (currently drowing under scrapbooking papers, cardstock, and embellishments of all types -- including loads of baby ones as I've recently been working on baby albums for the twins next door).

    Congratulations Weezl and Acetate Monkey!

Totally agree that there are now 3 people to be taken into account foodwise....think that you have been doing very well nutritionally on you 50p a day up to now, so won't join the general clamour for you to up your budget by any more, that decision is entirely up to you.

Please can I come to dinner to-morrow night, I have severe difficulties doing Indian meals as nobody else will eat them...too well fed they are I think.

ISOM...Happy birthday...have a cake :bdaycake:, can't say to enjoy your meal to-morrow...much too jealous as you will see from above!

    Night all, sleep well

    Happy Birthday ISOM!:bdaycake:

    Have a lovely day.

Here's the green tomato chutney recipe as requested. We love it, even DN who normally thinks anything with vinegar is an abomination  (the rest of us LOVE anything pickled, much to his disgust :rotfl: )

    Green tomato chutney

    3lbs green tomatoes
    4 large apples
2 small cucumbers (or 1 big one, I suppose!)
    3 alrge onions
    6oz sultanas
    3/4lb demerara sugar
    2 tbsp mustard
    1 1/2 tsp ground ginger
    1 level tsp cayenne
    1 1/2 tbsp salt
4 1/2 gills vinegar (I used just over 1 pint malt vinegar)

The recipe is a bit vague about chopping the veg, so we (DD1 helped me)quartered the tomatoes, halved and sliced the onions, quartered, peeled, cored and sliced the appples and halved the cucumber lengthways before slicing. Put all the ingredients in a large pan, bring to boil and simmer for 2 to 3 hours until thick and veg soft. No vinegar should seep out of the chutney when you draw a spoon along the bottom of the pan. Seal in warmed jars (I heat in a low oven, but HOT from the dishwasher is supposed to be as good. I can never time it right though.)

I also found this recipe which I haven't tried, but may do as haws (berries on the hawthorn tree) are everywhere round here, not to mention free! If anybody else tries it, would they like to report back?!

    Haw Sauce
    1 1/2 lb haws
    4 oz sugar
    1 oz salt
3 gills vinegar (I think this is about 1 pint, but would have to check on google)
    1/2 tsp white pepper

wash haws well, cook with vinegar over a gentle heat for 30 mins then push through a sieve.Return to pan with other ingredients, boil for 10 mins then pot and seal.

The thing to remember with chutneys is that it's the proportions that are important, not the actual ingredients. I didn't have any demerara sugar, so I used white with a little bit of soft brown sugar, and it works fine. I made one half-batch without cucumber, just added extra tomatoes. It had several small windfall apples in it too, rather than 2 large ones. You could probably sub courgette for the cucumber too.

Will post a recipe for pickled blackberries soon. I made 1 jar last year to test the recipe and we wished I'd made more- nom. nom. nom etc :D
