  • Hot yellow plum chutney

    Makes 1.3kg/3ibs

900g/2ibs yellow plum, halved and stones removed
    1 finely chopped onion
    7.5cm/3inch fresh ginger
    3 whole star anise
    350ml/12fl oz/1 ½ cups white wine vinegar
225g/8oz/1 cup soft light brown sugar
    5 thinly sliced celery sticks
3 green chillies – seeded and finely sliced
    2 crushed garlic cloves

Put plum, onion and star anise in large pan and pour ½ the vinegar. Bring to boil and simmer for 30 minutes or until plums softened.
Stir in remaining vinegar, celery, chillies and garlic and stir until sugar dissolved. Bring to the boil and simmer for 45-50 minutes or until thick and no liquid remains. Stir frequently toward the end to void sticking. Store in sterilised jars and use within 2 years!

  • Hi
Just wanted to say we tried the curry sauce for 4p last night and it was great - just like chip shop curry sauce. We added chicken and onions and it was sweet very similar to the curries I used to make with bramleys and sultanas.

Nipped down the shops this morning as we're out of bread and almost out of milk -- and have hubby's brother and sister coming over in an hour or so as it's his birthday, so need to be able to offer them something to eat & drink !!!

Got a good deal in Co-Op which made the walk in the drizzle worthwhile. Stuffed pasta (cheese and smoked ham - not my favourite, but at the price I can eat it) in clearance at £1 a 300g bag instead of £2.29. But they're also on an offer of 2 for £3, and unless the till staff are on the ball the reductions get applied to Whoopsies! too. I was served by the manager so though it would be spotted, but it wasn't..... so it cost me 84p for 4 bags. And when served with a sauce (normally Whoopsie! at 20p-45p) and the cheapy Mr A frozen bangers, one bag is enough to make a substantial -- and cheap -- meal for the three of us :T

boiled the pasta drained the sweetcorn then added emptied in the tinned pineapple juice as well then crated in the cheese heated till all melted together mmmmm

Just about to take my first ever batch of onion chutney off the stove. Keeping fingers crossed that it will be nice and actually taste nice as well in a few weeks.

Hope everyone has had a lovely day thus far!

Well made the first batch of chutney, not so sure what I think. Did not make a great deal overall, well two nearly 3 12oz jars. When I think of the cost of the onions, sugar, vinegar and gas to cook it, I am really not sure if it is worth it, however did have a little taste off the spoon when all finished and it does taste lovely! Suppose that makes it worth it.

Going to try and make the Dowager Chutney later this week and see how I get on with that. Now if I just knew someone who had plum trees!!

thanks for listening to me thinking out loud!!
