re jars for jam, I find that jars that have had mayonnaise or tomato puree in them don't smell tainted. I have to hide mine from OH too! But he's not complaining now we have 9 jars of blackberry and apple to hoard away for winter (ooh I feel like a squirrel)

thanks for the tip about butter - I never knew that!

Will probably buy a dehydrator if I come across one but last year I used my fan oven at about 90c, four racks which I lined with baking parchment. Core and peel apples, (you can use core and peel to make apple jelly), slice fairly thinly and lay out on racks, leave in oven until dry....can't remember how long it took but was several hours. When dried to a slightly rubbery texture, leave out for about a day, then all I did was put them into a brown paper bag, roll down top and ignore...kept them with my flour and other dried fruit...was really amazed at how long they lasted.

Was a bit of a fiddle, but was lovely to be able to grab a handful and chew...the drying seemed to sweeten them quite a bit.

  • ISOM, how do you work 'selling' the jam to colleagues. I'd love to sell some stuff, like HM cards and jam and chutney, not for masses of money but as I often give stuff away I am sure I end up out of pocket. Sorry if I have misunderstood!

Thanks for that link -- they have a fantastic range of jars. I'm also looking at using glass jars for storing odds and sods of craft items (so I can see what I have in the hope I'll use existing stuff instead of buying more that I can't afford!), and they have some small ones that may be incredibly useful for that..... just need to get on with sorting everything so I can work out if I need enough to justify buying 100 of them !!!

    Even better :)

Was looking at the 1.5oz round jars -- the ebay seller does 100 for £31.75 including postage (31.75p each), the site you've linked to sells them in trays of 126 and by the time I've added on delivery they come in at just £25.20 (20p each)
