Morning all
Well so far this morning I have got a bowl of bread dough proving and some of the 10lbs of apples i was given, peeled and stewing with the few blackberries we picked yesterday....
The rest of the apples will probably get done tomorrow.. and i have those veggies from the garden to roast off into pasta bases for the freezer...
I was so chuffed yesterday -we nipped to see if the NAAFI had any bread flour in yet... NO..so we decided to try one a bit further away and they had some :j so i loaded the last 13 bags into my trolley -now last time i got it -the lable said €1.49 but it came through at 75c..this time it came through at 37c a bag :T -it seems they are discontinuing tesco brands...so my loaves are going to work out at about 15c/12p a loaf plus gas
... And in a cunning plan, im going to keep on making loaves for sandwiches in a proper tin in the gas cooker -but then to save fuel when my remoska arrives im going to make cakes of bread in there for having with soups
I just want to get some beans n pulses in ready for the colder months and some longlife "emergency" milk.. so next week when we go to the NAAFI im going to look at the tesco brands and see if they are reduced too(not that they put it on the shelf)-i will have to ask someone to check
Dinner tonight is poached eggs on toast -one of our faves -and best of all hubby does it as i can't poach eggs :rotfl:
Cerediwen.... that course looks like something i might have to ask for as a xmas pressie when we move back to the UK
right i had better get off and get on with some x stitching -or mum will not be getting her xmas pressie this year  :rotfl:
hope everyone is well and having a good weekend-6 -8 -3 -1.5 -2.5 -3 -1.5-3.50 -

Though...I still have this idea lurking in my mind that people in the armed forces are taught a bit about wild food anyway - for living off the land purposes - I may be wrong on that. So - your husband might know a bit anyways.
Anyways - for reference for those wanting to know - the specific book I bought from Marcus for the purpose of planting a bit of "wild food" in my garden is on:

As it is now available.
I have now put that "post" I was thinking of on my blog.0 -

I picked up a tip from a relative earlier in the week...apparently if there's an arbertoire (sp?) with a farm attatched they may well sell meat to enquiriers...said relative was camping in Wales and did just that..and bagged a whole lamb for the freezer for £30 apparently :T Just wish I knew where to look locally for deals such as this...living in Norfolk has it's downsides <sigh> don't think there's any near here, but for any Welsh readers it may be worth looking...and I'm sure everyone who's a meat eater would be interested.....0

Just finished pulling apart a chicken from yesterday....
Spotted Somerfields have an offer on, with a 2.4kg chicken retailing for £4 instead of £8, which makes them cheaper per kg than the Mr T value ones.
Went out for one yesterday morning, which I'd decided could go in the slow cooker while I took hubby to hospital -- especially as we'd no idea what time we'd get home -- but when I went to pick one up I noticed that although they all said 2.4kg they had various cooking times.... from about 2hr 40 right up to 3hr 25. Now the only way they could need different times is if they're different weights, so I picked up the one with the longest cooking time which was right at the back of the display
Got it home, unpacked it, and popped it on my kitchen scales..... 3.154kg, so quite a good bargain.
Used 390g from it last night as roast chicken with jackets and frozen (previously whoopsied) brocolli and cauliflower. Have now sorted out the rest of the meat, the stock and the 'waste', and have another 1kg of meat (plus some bits towards a rissotto, but not as much as I'd normally get from a single bird -- which I can only put down to using the slow cooking instead of roasting in the over  ) plus loads of stock. Reckon I probably got about 1400g of meat off the bird in total, which is enough for 4 good meals for the 3 off us...... making it £1 a meal, or 33-34p a serving
Off to Aldi in a few mins to get some chips -- chicken and chips on the menu for tonightAm then thinking about trying to make a HM chicken and mushroom pie for Monday (have some ready rolled pastry in the freezer I bought as a Whoopsie a while back), and shoving the rest into a rissotto with some of the stock and some more mushrooms towards the back end of next week.
Have also hinted to hubby I'm going to see if I can find enough freezer space in case they get another 'big bird' in before the offer ends -- which I think is Tuesday......Cheryl0 -

I've done a "post" if you're interested to read it re the foraging course on "me blog" and sent our Weezl an email with my further personal thoughts on it (can forward you a copy if you like? but thought you might be not feeling up to much at t'moment).

Nice to see you back Shaz :T
Glad everything went OK ISOM
Well I have been fairly productive today.. managed :-- a new loaf of bread -allready started as we had poached eggs on toast for dinner
- stewed apples n blackberries -both free and now stashed in 3 bags in the freezer -and a bowl in the fridge:T
- roasted off HG tomatoes, peppers, courgettes, aubergine n chillies -now in 3 bags in the freezer
- made a batch of yoghurt -6 jars now sat in the fridge -looking forward to having some tomorrow with blackberry n apple mixed in
Other than that i have been sat x stitching mums xmas pressie ....and will be doing the same tomorrow.. Now the light is funny im going to sort out some ideas of what beans, pulses, staples etc i want to get stocked up on for over winter..
Hubby is going to ask on camp-as the supermarket "REAL" here is a normal supermarket on one side but a cash n carry version on the other side..and camp usually hold a card that you can borrow... so i want to have a jaunt to see how much cheaper it might be for pastas etc.... I know last time i went in for just a look -a lot of things were much cheaper -they sell huge packs of fresh meat etc... but its the store cupboard goodies im after
Right back off to do some organising,, have a great evening all-6 -8 -3 -1.5 -2.5 -3 -1.5-3.50 - a new loaf of bread -allready started as we had poached eggs on toast for dinner
