Hi Guys, just been catching up

Been pretty frugal around here recently I havent done a proper shop in over a month, just top ups for fruit and veges, eggs etc that are well within budget. Bread maker doesn't know what hit it :p

Just thought I would pop in and add something I tried this morning. I had frozen some syrup from a tin of peaches I had drained, because I thought there must be something I could do with it, and I defrosted and used in pikelets in place of milk. Tasted fine, if anyone else wants to try it, just measure and top up with water/ milk if you need some more liquid.

Also, I googled and found that you can freeze in ice cubes to add to drinks or mix with milk and make homemade iceblocks too.

With all the things I now freeze for a rainy day, I think I need to save for a bigger freezer lol :o

Also, for veges here Vege Sausage Recipe
Not the most nutricious recipe maybe, but I am keen on trying out as another way to use up bread bits ;)

1 medium onion, chopped finely or blitzed in a food processor
    1 cup grated cheese
3 cups (150g) soft bread crumbs or just crumbled bread, not proper bread crumbs
1/2 tsp salt + some black pepper to taste
1/4 tsp both sage and thyme
    2 eggs
some dry (proper) breadcrumbs to coat

Mix onion, cheese, breadcrumbs, seasonings. Add one of eggs and the yolk of the 2nd, reserving the white. Mix till combined well.

Shape into 6 'sausages'. If mix to wet add a bit more bread. Dip each sausage in the reserved egg white, and roll in the dry breadcrumbs. Stand at least 5 mins, book in an oiled pan till brown on all sides.

My friend gave me the recipe because I was complaining about additives in sausages :o she says they taste pretty good and kids eat em up.

    Morning all

Now errrm foxxy tigger... I have only demolished 1 punnet of nectarines -which is very restrained for me :o . As a rule most fruit here is pretty cheap (not from the NAFFI though -unless whoopsed  )but it seems to register in my head that it simply means i can eat more.. a bit like when i used to WW -anything low fat meant i could eat 2 :p :rotfl: .. finally cracked that by not buying low fat ;) .
I have taken to tinned/bottled fruit in juice ... a huge jar of stoneless cherries is 99c -about 80p but lasts me quite a while stuck under jelly :D

In Search Of me... I really can't get into sewing smaller things  i find them more confusing than big ones  ...The biggest i have done so far was a big blue dragon for my niece -he was about 3ft tall once i framed him..heck it was hard giving it away...but she was thrilled and at the age of 14 was upstairs on xmas morning whacking a hook in to hang it straight up :T . I have some stunners -its just finding time to get em done  ..
I keep threatening to get a new sewing machine...but im really not very good on one... think i have got used to my mum doing it for me :p she used to be a seamstress many moons ago. When we move back into our own house for good i may invest in one and learn.... I would love to be able to make things.. my mum even made my bridesmaid dresses for me :j . I really should pick her brain... I have tried to take on her other talents..heck most of my fave old recipes are things she used to make when we were young..

my dad had his first stroke in his 20s -so before i was born and they had 2 not 5 kids -things were really tight and the guy who used to do the means testing couldn't believe how mum made her money stretch.. I always remember that she said she used to get a bag of flour and you got a pack of lard free and on the lard pack was a coupon for 6 eggs (super bargain) and mum took full advantage of the offer... I guess thats why we all like good old home cooking -because mum rarely got anything from the shops ready made :D

I struggle with the thoughts of going out for meals... I just find myself thinking " i could do this for much less" :o ..it really does put a dampener on it!!!! Thing is now..hubby has said that he would think "hm could be eating this at home and prefering it" :rotfl: . I even have hubby weaning off of his once beloved Gyros -they are nice and you do get a lot -but €7.50 each -about £6 ..... makes us think twice:D ... thats nearly a weeks worth of "weezles" our new name for economical, healthy quick meals :rotfl:

cw18 .. hope your son is enjoying Hohne.. I loved it out there... you are sort of in the middle of no-where , so not much that you can walk to..but a lovely place non the less.... Hope he has found "Soltau" they have a great family owned bowling alley (well it was when we were there)...a great place to spend an evening.... ooohh an there is also the most stunning chinese restaurant that does all you can eat buffets ;) ....it was €5.99 at lunch time when we were there and absolutely gorgeous -they were constantly putting new stuff out and cooked in small batches so everything was fresh :T ..oooh and a lovely ice cream parlour just round the corner from it :p -guess who is lead by her stomach :rotfl:

Littleredheadedgirl.... now we know where to come for the chinese secrets :T We love oriental food and i cook quite a bit..so i will be [STRIKE]stalking[/STRIKE] following your posts :p

ZoeGirl.... great recipe :T ..... I make my own stuffing with leftover bread..not that i always get chance -hubby rarely leaves any hm bread:rotfl: ... So when he does i make balls and freeze them... will be having the last of the latest batch later. I haven't had any shop bread since we got here over a year ago, or any shop stuffing for years... quite often we have both said that we could have the stuffing in place of the joint (i stick a HM sausage in the mix ;) )

heck i can waffle :rotfl: and at this ungodly hour too.... I will be making that blackberry bake later -so will report back if its good ;)
    have a great day everyone:D

    Ok folks im back..

    blackberry2eg1.th.jpg
Grated blackberry bake :T ....it would be rude not to share the recipe wouldn't it ;)

I have just tried the tiniest sliver -purely for research purposes and so you guys don't waste your GC money making something not nice :p ..and ekky thump its gorgeous :j if only i hadn't frozen the jersey cream  :rotfl:

    GRATED BLACKBERRY BAKE RECIPE
grease and bottom line an 8" spring release tin
    pre-heat oven to 200c/400f/gas 6
    • 350g blackberries - I used 1lb as thats what i picked - free
    • 175g granulated sugar-i used 120g and its plenty sweet enough-10c
    • 275g plain flour 15c
    • pinch salt -0
    • grated zest 1 lemon -had 1 in
    • 175g butter or block marge -have some whoopsed so -20c
    • 100g golden caster sugar -25c
    • 1 medium egg beaten -15c
    1. prep blackberries n rinse -drain well
    2. place in a pan with 2tbs water and simmer for 8 mins until softened
    3. add sugar and increase heat until boiling -cook for 4-5 mins -stirring regularly -until thick - Mine took longer as i used less sugar -so i removed the blackberries and reduced the liquid on its own (thats it in the pot it has gone like jam -so im going to put it in HM nat yoghurt -2 puds for the price of 1 :T )i didn't add it back to the fruit as i reckon it would boil everywhere;)
    4. leave the fruit to cool
    5. sift flour and salt into a bowl and rub in the fat -to resemble bread crumbs
    6. stir in sugar and add egg and mix to form a dough -chill for 1 hr or freeze for 10 mins to firm -
    7. cut the pastry in half and grate one half over the bottom of the tin and press down slightly- i only chilled half..the other half i put into the tin and pressed out (like shortbread) and i squished it up a little at the sides (to keep the filling in)
    8. spread over the fruit and then grate the other half of the pastry over the top and take to the edges to stop the filling bubbling out
    9. bake for 35-40 mins until golden
    10. cool for 5 mins and then remove from tin and cut into wedges and serve warm with custard or cold as a cake
if anyone needs any clarification of my rambles -let me know :rotfl:
Thin when i do it again i might play with adding slivers of almonds, or coconut to the top,,, oooh and just think when you get the odds n sods of marzipan left at xmas... grate that in too :T ...getting far to excited about cake here :o

popped down the road this morning to get some free range eggs from the local farmer. They are usually £1.60 a dozen, and occasionally there are a few lumpy mis shapen ones in trays for a lot less. Today there were lots of bantam eggs for £1 for a whole tray, that's 30 eggs for 3.33p each - result!

tempted to get 2 trays, but thought better of it as I'm on this BORING food replacement diet so it's only OH who is eating proper food and there are only so many eggs he can eat

Spanish omelette for tea then (for OH)!

    Hi boodle...

If you wrap it in greaseproof and then in foil the foil won't tarnish and risk tainting your pud ;)
Also i would open it up every month or so and feed it a drop of alcohol..that should moisten it up:D
Must get mine made soon and the cake :T ..have 2 jars of HM mincemeat in the cupboard.. 3 years old now :p but fed every so often with alcohol and it is stunning:j

Ceridwen..thanks for the link..i will see if i can make sense of it in a moment :rotfl:
Mrs M, could you please post the mincemeat recipe.
