I really must use up some beans and seeds I have for sprouting - they're getting a bit old.

Anyone got any good (veggie) cooked recipes for beansprouts purlease? I know about chucking them in salads obviously - but would like some cooked ones.
  • ceridwen - ummm.... stirfry?

Ooh, why don't you google thai soup - I saw a recipe the other day that used a packet of stirfry veg, maybe you could adapt?

Ashia, I don't think I get what you're trying to achieve... are you going to stockpile this weekend first? Are you allowing yourself cornershop visits etc? Are you trying to use up bits and bobs in your cupboards?

I had a yummy dinner last night of vege bolognaise - dried soya mince, pasatta and various herbs & stock served on spaghetti - I think thats quite frugal!

    Hi
I have been following this with interest for a while. I just wanted to say on the subject of mini greenhouses/patio growing, I bought a 4 shelf mini green house at the beginning of the summer and covered it with net rather than use the plastic cover. I managered to fit loads on it and the net kept the birds and bugs off.
Also re blackberry wine. I have heated a few pans of blackberries with a little water then strained off most of the juice before I added sugar to the fruit. I froze the juice until I had a litre and I have used this to make wine. I hope it tastes OK.

    Hello again all,

I'm still trying to catch up on past posts in this thread so feeling a it slow on the uptake!

However, one thing about reading this thread is that it's made me more aware of the price of everything. I never realised before just how much I took for granted.

On Wednesday I went to Ikea for a mooch with a friend and as we left he wanted to buy us a hot dog each, but at 50p for a mere mouthful I couldn't get over the fact that weezl uses that much money for 3 meals. Yesterday when driving back from London I stopped at a services as was getting sleepy and needed a sugar fix. A huge red sign offering two kit kat chunkys for £1.20 would normally look like a good deal until I realised again that £1.20 could be spent on a couple of meals!

I'm meeting a friend in town later for lunch but instead of going for an expensive coffee and a sandwich I'm making something here and taking it in with me to treat her when she finishes work.

I am on woman on a mission!!! Just wait till I tell my OH!!! :rotfl:
Wandered away from the MSE track for a while but am back and on a mission! Debts cleared nearly £18k. Now to start saving ...

Have to agree Loumac.... even though I was already starting to think "do I really need" before finding Weezl's challenges, this thread has been a total eye-opener for me !!!

    Well done Loumac :D:D:D

Start as you mean to go on! That's what I say!
I am really trying to do the same.

  • I know what you mean. My food shopping is now dominated by mutters of "a quid for that?! But Weezl would feed two people for a whole day for that!"

I wonder if there is a name for us who would love to be as frugal and still live as well as Weezl? Weezl Wannabees? Weezl-ites? Weezl Worshippers?!

When I read the first pages of the challenge(s) I was muttering "but I couldn't do without X" and the longer I follow this, the less and less I think like that. I'm one of the slimming world followers, and that and the fact that I have a freezer the size of a matchbox goes against me achieving as little as 50p a day but it has made me think things are possible that a few months ago really didn't seem so. I am about to start my own challenge "pay off my car crash in 1 month" - I hit a motorcycle and amassed a bill of £357 this month, and have just worked out a budget that would see that full amount paid off in September's wage :A that's with me normally really struggling to stay within my monthly salary and never having any to spare. If I can pull that off, it will really be an eye opener to me. Watch this space, I'll start a thread about it shortly.

I have 4 jacket sized potatoes and a dozen new potatoes which need eating (but havent been).
can I freeze them? if so can i just bung them in the freezer or do they need cooking first

    thanks x

I freeze cooked jacket potatoes. Then defrost overnight in fridge and zap for 2 minutes. Not quite the same as fresh cooked but good for a nice easy lunch.
working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?

Just had the regular email from Aldi with the offers from Sunday

They've got a herb growing kit (for in the kitchen) for £3.99 -- can anyone tell me if they've ever used anything like this, and is it worth the money please?
