  • carriebradshaw, the split peas in lidl are 39p I think, for 500g. unfortunately they stopped doing lentils, but mine still do the stock mix for the same price which you could use occasionally for variety?

:o ... did I really just realise that I can quote a number of prices from Lidl?! How sad!!:rotfl:

thanks for that,I used to be able to quote their prices as well but I haven't been to lidl for ages,I like lots of their products OH says we can go there next time so I'll check them out :D The only thing I don't like about lidl is the checkout,no room to pack at the end of belt, it's a real pain as they go so fast it's hard to keep an eye on the register as well to make sure you're not being overcharged :o

Oh, that is where I become Victor Meldrew! I shove it into the trolley as fast as i can, then after having paid move to the side and dawdle for the next half hour, checking my receipt and packing into bags :D

(oh dear, its confessions day for me by the sound of it!)

Totally different topic, but does anyone use their broccoli stalk for anything cooking-wise? I hate to throw them out, but am never sure if it would be too woody to use in something? Would it grate up and add to the growing list of things you can put in with mince?

Me too.... and exactly the same in Aldi.

I check my receipts before leaving ANY store these days, as even the large ones regularly miss a mark down ticket or two. Especially like it when Mr A get it wrong, as I get a card with an extra couple of quid off my next shop as well ;)

My parents leave a lot more on the florets when they cook it than I do -- but I just feed the raw stalks from brocolli and cauliflower to the dalmatian

    Hi all

Carrie..i prefer the broccoli stalks to the tree bit :D I just start that off in the steamer before adding the florets.. if i have loads then i quite often turn it into soup... Can't stand throwing things away either ..hubby always loves the soups in his flask for winter lunches.. with a chunk or 3 of HM bread... cheap, tasty, filling and good for him and keeps him warm as he works outside a lot.

Money dribbler... as money saving diva said... i find no difference in the butter when it has been frozen :T

    Weezle..

I have been looking at the blogger site cerediwen told me about... so i think i might give it a go in the new year when a new season starts :p ... I have been out there today and fetched another 1lb of tomatoes in and roasted them off with oil and a chilli from the garden, with cracked black pepper and rock salt.. planning on bagging it up in the freezer to use in my next batch of chilli ;) hubby tried it and i had to take his spoon of him before there was non left  :rotfl: , I also fetched in a cucumber and a crystal apple cumber and some patty pan ...have you tried growing patty pane before? if not -i would give them a go -they seem very solid and meaty even when cooked :T
Thanks for thinking of me and why i went home... Yes it was what i needed -Although my mama (mums mum) passed away 1hr after the army had sorted out transport out  at least she was 93 and had "had enough".. they got us to my mums front door in under 12hrs :T and i got to spend my sisters last 10 days with her... made sure i saw her every day... it was the most painfull thing i have ever been through -but we got time to make sure sis knew how much she was loved and that we would all be there for her hubby and daughter. Strangely enough that event has spurred me on to crank up the "cutting down wastage" campaign -so we can spend more of our hard earned cash on living and not just existing.. so less money in the supermarkets pocket and more in ours..ooh im rambling now :p (no change there)
If you ever have any questions about veggie growing etc ..feel free to ask -if i don't know the answer -my mum will ;) ..that goes for everyone else of course :D
Right enough waffle i will get off
have a great evening all :D

A quick piccie of some of the bits i picked today

I generally just trim the very end off, as small a slice as I can, and then slice down from the florets right down to the end of the stalk and cook it all together. I prefer the stalk part too, and sometimes I slice that off and just have that while OH, who doesn't like the stalk, gets the florets.

Have you tried just eating it as normal, if you have did you not like it? If you didn't, I have used extra stalk in soups, they just disappear. I have even, when I had LOADS that I couldn't eat by myself, made a soup that was JUST broccoli stalks. It was the same recipe as Parsnip soup, but using stalks instead and it worked very well

    Hi all

It seems to be quite a thing...all the ladies eating the broccoli stalks and giving the men the floret bit :p

On a super happy note... I have just had an email back from the company that do the Patiogro thing i posted the other day

    http://www.grogardenproducts.co.uk/patiogro-agreene.html

and they have agreed to letting me have it Tax Free :j .. so im just waiting for the invoice so i can pay it... I work it out to be paying a little over £100 for that and the extension/PVC cover -when it should be £119.84..plus the irrigation system free -that should be abother £19.99 -so a saving of nearly £40 :T
At one time i would never have asked..but im learning ;) thanks to everyone on threads like this one..
Hopefully it will free up space and containers to grow other things -and keep the slugs of my salad leaves etc :D
