£496 is seriously impressive! Hope all your veg turns out, I wish I'd planted more now!!

Today I have been shocked at the price of fruit. I'm more of a veg person, but I usually buy bananas and apples. Forgot to take any to work today so nipped into Tesco for one of each - 15p for a banana and 22p for an apple! Need to try and find some cheaper alternatives, maybe tinned fruit?

Been cooking up some rice krispie cakes today, having inherited rice krispies and butter from ISOM:D and having dark chocolate from the lovely Shaz:D. So all I had to contribute was 50g sugar. Due to the generosity of my friends, my batch of 26 cakes work out at 6 for a penny!!!:money::money: But you can make them by buying everything for 3.5p each, which I think is pretty good too;)

I should be working hard, but just thought I'd see what's going on . Excellent!, I shall look forward to them when i get home :T :T

And thanks for the crumpets ISOM, they were lovely this morning :D

Acetate monkey you aren't allowed to roll your eyes at me, or you'll not get any lovely krispie cakes (nomnomnom:D all for weezls now...)

Hope all have picked up that ISOM donated the crumpets yesterday, rather than just logging on now and thinkinking ISOM and acetate have been meeting for a clandestine breakfast a deaux!

Hi freyasmum, glad you popped in, It is often quieter on here in the day eh?

redsquirrel 20g of dried fruit like sultanas counts as one of your '5 a day' that's 1.6p per serving (about a tablespoon)- a wee bit cheaper than a 20p apple! Hope that's of some use?! I'm costing according to asda smartprice sultanas.

Cool, my favourite porridge I eat each day costs 5p per portion! I make it with water and raisins, don't add sugar, and a dash of milk (about 30ml).
I must look further into this malarky but I have to get on with jobs now!

(In my curry book there was a recipe for "everlasting yogurt" where you heat milk up, stir in 2 tbsp of natural yogurt and leave in a bowl covered with a tea cosy and then it turns into yogurt overnight, then you can reserve 2 tbsp of this to use for your next batch... Would this work out cheaper for yogurt than buying it?)

Weezl, I was thinking about this yesterday. How are you costing the food that you grow?

Does it count as 'free' cos it's not from a shop? Are you including the cost of equipment - e.g. seeds, compost?

Weezl your threads are so inspirational!
I have already saved so much money coming on here,I had never even thought of 'no spend days' prior to coming on MSE!

Although my monthly budget is huge compared to yours, I am pleased with what I am doing and know that this process-for me-is a bit like dieting.ie if I gradually reduce my expenditure over a period of time, learning and developing better habits, I am more likely to stay moneysaving.
It is also rubbing off on my children,as they know that I am 'shopping' in our own freezer and cupboards most days now and love the recipes I have been using off here. Also my DD is hopefully off to Uni in September, and wants me to print off all the recipes for her to take.

I regret all the money I have 'wasted' in the past-when I was working I used to go to MrT virtually every day as I had nothing planned for meals. I don't set my meal plan in stone now,but I do know I have the makings of various meals in the house all the time to choose from.

It may not be rocket science, but it just as well may have been for me up until the last couple of months.
Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!

    Hi Weezl

Just a note to say wow ! Can't believe the amount that 1 years food is going to potentially cost. Makes me realise how much I spend and what I could do about it. Still trawling your original thread, but will be copying trying out lots I am sure.

Thanks for being such an inspiration.

  • Hey up young Weezl, well first week into challenge and i have been costing out as much as i can and i reckon i am coming very close to it on a daily basis. I must say it helps cooking for four, as it gives me a bit extra as well. Have been baking and making soups like mad, and will have a tally up tomorrow. I have been costing it out daily on my thread, but need to add on any extras..and todays meals!:j

so far though have spent £32...(have only got to stock up on milk!) in shops in preparation for this and have found stuff lurking at the back of my cupboards i never knew i had! Plus the use of leftovers to make truely scrummy soups.yesterdays is still sitting nicely on tummy....and i have to say we have been stuffed!
    Yeterdays soup..
Left over sauce from pork stroganoff, and rice ( low fat )
Added 1 litre of chicken stock, and 1 tin of plum toms=19p served with Whoopsie bread from Asda, 6p for a whole seeded poppy stick:T about 1p probably even less for the bread...........everyone could have eaten three bowls..well the teenagers did! As i am on SW, i try and limit my piggy tendencies:rotfl:

So on behalf of the mini BOBs,alias Queenie and Baldrick and the rest of us,many thanks for opening eyes etc.:T :A

Shaz, thats a brilliant idea for mini cakes...as i am currently making friends wedding cake, and have thought about what you use for cake and loaf making..and i eye up all my tins for extra plants or decorative light holders in gardens..now another use:rotfl:
Blackadder: Am I jumping the gun, Baldrick, or are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation?
Still lurking around with a hope of some salvation:cool:

although I've been a member of MSE for a little while, I don't come on very often and hadn't seen the previous challenge at all :embarasse

but this one was mentioned on another forum yesterday (a crafting forum, that has a non-crafting area where we're currently trying to come up with ideas to save pennies on food shopping), so I hopped on over for a look.

there's no way I could reduce my bills as much as Weezl :( But I don't have lovely friends throwing food in my direction or anything growing in my garden (apart from a lawn full of weeds - or should that be a lawn of weeds!).

However I did amaze a few people on the other forum. I tried to plan June's meals around what I could find in the clearance sections of our local Co-Op and Somerfields (walking distance, and I'm currently off work so have the time to nip down a couple of times a day), and the cooked meals for 2 adults and a teenage son (almost 17) during June came in at just under £69 for the month (plus things like milk & marge for the mashed potatoes, gravy granules and condiments).

Given that 2 years ago I could easily spend £100 a week on the 'main' shop, and then more during the week on perishables, I was more than happy with that -- even though I still need to add on breakfasts, lunches and cleaning/hygiene products (and dog food which is £30/month and can't be reduced due to dietary restrictions for one of them, but was never included in my weekly shop as it's not from a supermarket!)

I'm up to date on this thread, and am currently working my way through the old challenge (up to page 8), and saving off recipes that are possibly worth trying..... My problem is that my husband and son won't even consider vegetarian meals (and spot things made with soya mince or Quorn - both of which I eat -- a mile off even if they don't see me cooking it and don't see the packaging( and don't consider they've been fed unless they can see the meat on their plates :o

I'm off down the road in a while to check out both the previously mentioned stores (plus Aldi and Lidl which are also in walking distance) for some of the ingredients as I love my Humous and Guacamole :)

Am also drooling at the cinammon syrup -- so think I may have to get some porridge oats if I don't have any lurking at the back of a cupboard

Many thanks for the wonderful ideas to date -- and I shall continue to watch/lurk with interest
