Netto penne pasta is 19p for 500g... that's less than 4p a serving if my calculations are correct
Morning Sian!:hello:
grrrrrrr, Cardiff has no netto! Thanks for the tip tho, loads of other folk will benefit from knowing that. That's what asda smart price pasta used to be, but it more than doubled recently.
Thanks for including the Halwa recipe too, a sure fire one for the index! Now we need some sweet things involving turnips for BOB...:D
Hello wyebird, :hello:yes they were teeny little windfalls. I had to put double the sugar that the recipe said, but it's very lovely! It's from my friend's '1000 indian recipes' book. Would you like me to post it?
Alfie, welcome!:D
Glad it's a motivating thread to read. I do hope so!
Just sat feeling very happy while having a mug of coffee, poached egg and 2 slices of wholemeal bread. total: 13p :money:
And when Mr Weezl gets up, he can have his freegan crumpets with homemade marmalade!
Love Weezl x

Weezl I'll be watching closely, and maybe even trying to join in a bit when I finish school for the summer, but doubt I can match your targets:j :j"You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf"

Hi candygirl, glad you'd like to join in.;) Fortunately, matching my weird budget is not a prerequisite of posting here.... Or it'd be just me and BOB I think!
I don't mind what anyone spends, at all. If there are ways we can reduce it painlessly and healthily, that makes me smile.
THOUGHT i'd post a bit about growing my own (veg). Up until last year, all I'd tried growing was rocket, which was a great success 2 years on the trot, but my the end of year 2 was too fiery and peppery. In future, I'd harvest the seeds, pull up and resow each year. The rest of our garden was 'ornamental', apart from an old roll top bath which has sage, rosemary, and 2 sorts of thyme in it.
This year I am trying, cucumber, tomatoes, nastertiums, raspberries, mizuna, spinach, carrot, beets, squashes, californian salad, a couple of dwarf beans and a few mangetout.
Also have high hopes for ISOM's allotment spuds, toms, rhubarb....;)
I'm gradually going to try to turn over more parts to be useful rather than just decorative! Actually, I'd much prefer both, but that's really hard. I wish I knew more about how to get loads of green and colourful ground cover (hate bare, brown earth!) without damaging the edible plants...
Part of the reason for setting the challenge quite low (!) is that I hope to be able to supplement our diet with all this fresh stuff, and to judiciously use preserves to take us right up to christmas!
Oh! I worked out a really cool thing t'other day. When I first set mega budget challenges (last october) we did 3 months of £50 a month including christmas hampers, then 3 months at £45, then (the USDA challenge) 3 months at £40. If we manage the next 3 months on the intended 50p a day, in a WHOLE year, for the 2 of us, we'll have spent £496 on food.
We used to sometimes do that in a month! I can't believe it!:D Thank you to all Old-stylers. What an amazing saving :T
Love Weezl, who can't quite believe it! x

BACK ON TOPIC NOW
Im loving this thread and am following it post for post - some of the ideas are amazing and if i didnt have a wimp of a boyfriend i would be attempting a few of these myself. I am keenly watching this for the recipes and am loving your menu updates daily Weezl , come on girl you can do it - also a friend of mine has an allotment and im wondering if she has some of the blocking 14 if your still in need (jsut reread and says ISOM has some)
Keep up the good workTime to find me again0 -
Perhaps this isn't the place, but over on the Special Occasions board there are threads up & running for 'crafty crimbo' & other such.
Anyhoo, I was having one of my infamous 'thinking out louds' about making individual crimbo cakes as gifts for elderly rellies, neighbours etc but not sure what to bake them in......I thought of terracotta pots but then a couple of other posters suggested small baked bean tins or even tuna tins--well scrubbed first of course!
Would those suggestions be of any help to you Weezl, in fattening up our Acetate? Or even to replace the ramekin dishes for the puds in the slo-cooker/freezer:j

eileen_forward wrote: »Hi could any one please tell a use for comfrey, I have loads sprouting in the garden whilst its great for getting the compost heap going, I would love to know if any one has any good ideas. Many thanks
Have you tried making plant food from it (aka "comfrey tea")? It's free to make and very effective, although it stinks to high heaven. Basically, you soak comfrey leaves in a bucket, then use the liquid to water with, but there's more detailed info. here: http://www.allotment.org.uk/vegetable/comfrey/index.php. But perhaps that's what you were putting on the compost anyway?0 -
Never the wrong place for your thoughts bigmumma!
Christmas cake in tuna tins? Yep, I think that would work...
Hi sammykaye! Yay for the south Wales MSE contingent :j:j
Been cooking up some rice krispie cakes today, having inherited rice krispies and butter from ISOMand having dark chocolate from the lovely Shaz:D. So all I had to contribute was 50g sugar. Due to the generosity of my friends, my batch of 26 cakes work out at 6 for a penny!!!:money::money: But you can make them by buying everything for 3.5p each, which I think is pretty good too;)
250g rice cereal
50g butter
50g sugar
100g dark chocolate
Mix butter, sugar and chocolate together in a large pan on gentle heat until melted. Melt sugar into butter first so choc doesn't over-heat!:D
Turn off heat and stir in cereal. While still warm place 2 heaped dessertspoons of mix into each fairy cake holder. Or press gently into baking tin and cut into cubes later.
Enjoy!
Love Weezl x

Just thought I'd pop in and say hello this morning... it's quite and I'm shy
I started reading your challenge when you were about half-way through and still haven't finished reading it all (skipped to the end though :A) but I can see this is already going to match it and more!
I'm more usually found in the arms these days, but you've given me the excuse for popping back regularlyBeen cooking up some rice krispie cakes today, having inherited rice krispies and butter from ISOMand having dark chocolate from the lovely Shaz:D. I make mine with just chocolate and krispies, but I think this would go
further?
Good luck0
