maybe with your turnip obsession you should change your avatar to Baldrick!
That is DS1's name, and i often am found to be lobbing a manky turnip in his direction, but only of a suitable OS meal can't be made off it!:rotfl:Blackadder: Am I jumping the gun, Baldrick, or are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation?
Still lurking around with a hope of some salvation:cool:0 -
Sorry can't remember who it was who wanted to make mini xmas cakes as pressies.....
I used to teach adults with learning difficulties and we used to make xmas and simmel cakes using either a clean empty baked bean tin or a tin that once had a steamed sponge pudding in.
Just wash well, flatten any sharp bits and line with greaseproff paper.
Have a recipe somewhere for the amount to fill one tin.
Let me know if it's wanted and I will post it!!0 -
I think the latest comments on there prob'ly answers your question about how the budgetting for the growing our own works out plum pie, but I'm happy to post it on here too, if people want?
Thanks for resopnding. I think we should leave them there to drive more traffic to your blog which is very stylish as well as fascinating!0 -

yes please! this thread has so inspired me, I'm in the mood to collect some recipes - especially with school hols coming up.
weezl - your blog is brilliant- those photos look amazing, so professional!
think I might go out and photograph our veg patch later, would make an interesting addition to the family album wouldn't it? "the new arrivals, summer 08"
my family (ie the humans, not the vegetables) are all getting excited about "the 50p lady" as you are now known. Even OH - who is used to me getting obsessive about various topics - is intrigued. I think it was the mention of home made lentil pate that piqued his interest...the way to a man's heart eh?weaving through the chaos...0 -
well, I did a first this morning.
I made a list of things I needed for a few of the recipes on the last challenge thread, crossed off things I already have, and added a few "staples" we need.
I then headed down to the local green-grocers, Co-Op, Somerfields (where I picked up some markdown chicken fillets to save me pulling out of the freezer for tea), then Aldi, noting what they had that was on my list along with the prices. Then I went up to Lidl (which is furthest away), and if their's was the cheapest price I picked up from there. I then worked my way back to Aldi for what was cheaper there, but didn't figure it worth heading back to any of the others.
I've now come home and had a bite to eat, and checked the prices of the remaining items on the Tesco website -- so as I have a bus ticket that's valid for today (didn't cost me anything, but don't ask!) I'm about to head out to Tesco for the last few bits
The biggest differences I found were bananas (49p for 2lb at the green-grocers, but 33p/kg a Lidl) and fresh garlic (39p per bulb at 2 of the stores, and 34p for 4 bulbs at Lidl..... now I've just got to find enough uses for it, as I've no-one to share them with !!)Cheryl0 -
Hi weezl74 - congrats on Post of the Month, truly deserved. Now can I please ask for the Sour Apple Bahji recipe, I didn't know they could be used in cooking and can't believe how many I have thrown into the Composter.
Shall go out in the Garden in a moment and see if any have fallen off today in anticipation of your recipe - many thanks in advance.;)

Yes please Weezl. Thanks

Re the front garden - you may have caught sight of it anyway (as in I mention it in a recent post on my blog):
http://ourpintsizedplot.wordpress.com/
Suggest you scroll you way back to the beginning and then move up from there. They only have the typical teensy front garden and have turned it over to growing food in.
Buddhist husband who wont argue with you eh? (as our Weezl might say:D ) - oooh well....we'll start by asking "how does your garden grow pretty maid?" and then ask for the state of play re your karma;)0 -
