what does it taste like i know its strained cottage cheese but does it still taste like it ..............................we hade a disater with tofu so a bit nervous
Shaz :Gone to get Madhur Jaffrey's book to check out recipes
shaz, as a kid my mum quite often make paneer when we had too much milk and we always used a tablespoon of vinegar to make it with and not lemon juice but I should imagine it creates the same effect, the paneer you make a home is always a bit crumblier than the stuff you buy in packets but it is tasty!0 -
paneer sounds very easy to make - how would you use it once made?
ISOM - how did yoghurt n3 turn out? Do you like it? My kids love HM yoghurt but friend's children won't touch it without added sugar as they are so used to SM yoghurt(!)0 -
:j Congrats on the slow cooker result!:j
ThanksI amazed myself even daring to query the prices in the stores -- certainly up to 2 years ago (and probably even 6 months ago) I might have asked if it had only been about 10% of the store price, but the differences I was seeing today would have seemed too much to expect of them
Yet I'm the one in the family that haggles !!!! (have done it on the price of a new car, and the cost of finance on a second hand one -- both much to the embarrassment of hubby who was shocked when I got the deal I wanted on both counts)

Fantastic thread guys and gals. Hubby and I have adopted some of Weezls frugal ways and can now sit smugly at family get togethers and stun everyone who is moaning about the rising cost of food that our food blil is going down every month
On a different matter, can anyone give me some advise on use by dates?
MIL gave me a tin of squirty cream - Anchor real UHT stuff - as she says she's only used it once and didn't really like it.
Trouble is, the use by date is March 2008. It's been stored in the fridge since she opened it in January.
I have so many eggs i could do meringue with if I just had the cream. I'm determined not to go to the shops for food until this weekend, by which time I'll be knee deep in eggs.
Any thoughts on how long squirty cream lasts? Surely in a can it's quite a while?"carpe that diem"0 -

ThanksAnd yes, hubby, younger son and I were all starting to fight - which seemed to stop instantly I'd shown elder son the door. Hubby was horrified I'd done it, but didn't try and stop me (apparently he didn't think it was his place, as he's "only" a step-father to that one!), but did say 12 months later he thought I'd actually done the right/best thing.
I don't think I feel quite as big a failure these days though, as son did tell me (when he was home at Spring Bank) that he can now see why I did what I did -- and then gave me a huuuuge hug! Think I've actually had more hugs from him in the past 12 months than I did in the preceding 7 years
Anyway...... plans for tomorrow are to have a try of something in my new slow cooker (is there a thread somewhere with cheap recipes?) and also to try the no-knead bread (and possibly Twinks Hobnobs as well). Hubby is at hospital all day, so I have to blitz/disinfect his bedroom, the lounge and the cloakroom while he's gone (issues with risk of infection), but know I'll need breaks from that else I'll go maaaaaad :rolleyes2 Going to try the no-knead with half wholemeal (which I like but younger son won't touch) and half white flour. I'm hoping it'll then be white enough to fool son, as he's used to HM bread not being as white as shop boughtCheryl0 -

I've used that stuff well beyond it's date before without a problem - even cans we've used "now and again" from when I bought it.
But I have friends who won't touch anything on or after a use by/best before date -- one had a serious case of food poisoning once, but the others just "won't risk the health of their families". They shudder when I point out that if it weren't for "whoopsies" (some of which goes into the freezer which gains even more shudders) we wouldn't have meat more than a couple of times a week (when we have -- more shudders from friends -- value/smartprice mince or sausages)Cheryl0 -
afternoon all,

I've recently stopped buying meat from supermarkets and only from local butcher, and although prime meat is pricier, my meat bill is getting lower because of what very helpful butcher + H FW book is teaching me. Don't know if that helps at all. Really good flavour too. Definitely going to try totters next week:D
Happilass - I'm a lurker and a red/green gal too:D . As a red day fan, we do like our meat, so the above is proving very useful.I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once0
