    Evening all!

We were busy all weekend, and so I've only just caught up with all the posts!

I'm really chuffed because I made £70 by selling some cakes/jam to friends and having a car boot sale :j Next weeks family holiday (ie, us, my brother, SIL, their children and my parents- wish me luck ;) ) was looking a bit...tight, shall we say, for petrol/spending/everything money,so I'm so relieved. We'll still have to be careful, but that's a lot more ice creams!

Then DH spoke to a chap with an amazing allotment in the village who said he composted a lot of his veg because he grew so much  . DH reassurred him we could help with his surplus problem (our allotment is a work in progress and half the size of his! There are also 5 of us and (mostly) 2 of them- his son is away a lot.) Consequently, we got given a lovely cabbage yesterday. :D

The children were at MIL's whilst I carbooted, which meant they got given roast chicken at MIL's and came home with a packet of Tuc biscuits and garlic cheese for their tea! (This doesn't happen often, BTW!) She also gave us some chicken for DH (Poor man, being married to a vegetarian who feeds him lentils. And pigs feet.) and the leftover boiled potatoes.
So our tea last night (we'd missed lunch) was free potatoes, free cabbage and an onion, all fried together, with chicken (him) and left over veggie sausage (me). Yum!
Today we had pork chops from the freezer (bought 1/2 pig a while ago) (I had a veggie burger, also from freezer) with HM coleslaw (free cabbage, free spring onions from allotment, 2 grated carrots, mayo, HM yogurt, dash maple syrup and the last few sunflower seeds from the packet. Really delicious.) and potatoes, so pretty pleased!

shaz, as a kid my mum quite often make paneer when we had too much milk and we always used a tablespoon of vinegar to make it with and not lemon juice but I should imagine it creates the same effect, the paneer you make a home is always a bit crumblier than the stuff you buy in packets but it is tasty!

Made my first batch with the kids last w/e used HM yogurt instead of lemon juice or vinegar following this recipe
    http://uktv.co.uk/food/recipe/aid/602835
V easy and quick, tasted nice and bland (not at all like tofu which was what OH was afraid of). Used some to bulk out some leftover curry and the rest in a tomato sauce which the kids loved. Doesn't melt like normal cheese and soaks up any flavours if you marinate it. Will be trying this again provided milk prices don't carry on sky rocketing.:D

    Thanks,

I'm sure it'll be really nice and it's only a week so my dad can't drive us all too mad in that time...

  • I usually use the left over juice in cans of fruit to make home made lollies for the kids (and me!!) I also freeze any yoghurts I get that are close to the sell by date - they make great lollies spooned into a mold (mould? My spelling head seems to be asleep tonight!) too!:T

Now we are getting into the season where those of you who grow your own stuff are starting to get cheap veg (sighs deeply at regret of having to give up own allotment at start of year due to move...) this is a good recipe combining excess veg and bread with fresh basil- I use my BM to make the dough for me ;)

    Stromboli
Take veggies such as courgettes, peppers, tomatoes, onions, garlic, aubergines, mushrooms, etc and cut into chunks - you need about enough to fill a large roasting tin in a single layer
Toss the veggies in a little oil and roast in a hot oven until soft.
Make a basic bread dough from 1 lb flour, 1 sachet yeast, 4 fl oz oil, 10 fl oz warm water 1 tsp sugar and 1/4 tsp salt. Either use a bread maker with a dough setting or mix all the ingredients together to make a dough and leave to double in size in a warm place.
    Knead the dough until smooth.
Take a large baking tin. Put some oil in the tin to stop the dough sticking and then with oiled hands spread the dough out to a single layer.
Pile the veggies onto the dough (leave a 2 cm around the edge free) and top with fresh basil leaves. Fold the dough over and press the edges to seal all the veggies in.
Brush the top with a little oil and sprinkle with sea salt if liked.
Bake in a hot oven (Gas 6) for about 40 minutes - it should be risen and brown and sound "hollow" when you tap the top (mine always spreads sideways too hence using a tin not a sheet).
Serve in hunks hot or cold
Cheap and v tasty if you have your own veggies and herbs....the roasted veggies also keep for a day or so in the fridge so I cook them when the oven is on for something else to save the fuel.

morning pepys! well its a definate grrr from me...#2 yog didnt work....Weezl do you want 1/2 the gloop for soda bread? Also have white flour (by the sackload but cant eat it in such huge quantities on SW!) if that would help? Let me know! As for the yog I wonder if its because it was out of date? Am mighty peed off though as thats two pints of milk gone (& cos I get happy mlk its more expensive!)...I'm using marvel dried milk as thought this ok? WIll get some rachels organic milk today, more longlife and try again. What am I doing wrong though. Yesterday I took milk out of fridge & warmed it in MW with the dried milk, added a tablespoon of yog & filled he easy yo with water just up to top of red thing it sits on (there isnt a line on mine but that means the water rises to about 1/2 way up the container). Am now determined to get it right (not stubborn just focussed :) .....The only thing I can think is the yog being OUD & the temp so will use the thermometor this time. What temp should it be? Suggestions gratefully received - I reallly was quite upset when I excitedly opened the lid & yet again runny gloop..very disheartening...

Also interested to know how they got onto the are you Mr Weezl/AM then!

Think I will go to car boot & on a cheapie strawberry hunt this am! Just having a nice brekkie!

apologies if this has been sorted but am catching up!

I have an easiyo. in the main pot i put nearly a litre of from the cupboard UHT milk, don't heat it. add a spoonful of powdered milk. add a good tablespoon of live yoghurt. put lid on tightly (speak from experience!:rotfl: ) and shake well.

boil water and once boiled immediately fill outer container to top of red thingy immediately add the inner container and pop main lid on. i then leave until i remember it :rotfl: generally 8 hours longer you leave it the sharper it'll be.

you can also add syrup/ honey/ jam at the shake stage, however not doing this means i can add to savoury stuff too. HTH x
